Any good places to eat?

Can people who already have stayed in UW for a while tell me some good places to go to eat?
Im already in UW and am a freshman, theres a girl I like but I dont have much experience around this area, so any good recommendations?

Thanks!

Hi! I’m a freshman as well but I’ve been in the area a lot lately :)

Here are my favorites:
Thai: Thai Tom’s
Teriyaki: University Teriyaki
Pho: Than Brothers Restaurant
Bubble Tea/Pearl Milk Tea/Boba: WOW
Chipotle

This is pretty much what I get on the Ave. Someone else on the forum can give more suggestions based on taste  A recent Welcome publication was sent out in the mail by The Daily, and had many suggestions for food on the Ave! They also have suggestions in ‘The Weekender,’ which can also be viewed online: [The Daily of the University of Washington](http://dailyuw.com/)

You can also just grab some friends and try out the different food and choose what you like!

Thai Tom’s is dirty, small, bug-infested, loud, cramped. If you’re good with that, it’s good food. They don’t take credit cards, so bring cash. A cockroach may or may not crawl across your table as you eat and your to-go box may or may not have been stored on the restroom floor prior to being used. And your waiter may or may not forcefully demand you leave a tip before you leave.

Thai restaurants are a dime a dozen on the ave. Personally I prefer ‘What da Phad!?’ up past 45th, or ‘Banana Leaf Cafe’ down near 40th.

There’s a lot of good teriyaki places as well. UT isn’t one of them. Try ‘Yummy Bites’ between 41st and 42nd or walk up past 50th (the sketchy block) to ‘Kiku’s Tempura House’.

Good Pho can be found at ‘Pho Thy Thy’ right next to Yummy Bites, or ‘Pho Vietnam’ between 42nd and 43rd.

The very best Indian food is at Garam Masala, right next to What da Phad. I literally had Garam Masala withdrawals this summer. It is my favorite place on the Ave. Do yourself a favor and go, please. Do it, you’ll probably see me there.

Unfortunately there are no good Chinese places. China First is slightly better than New China Express, but neither are worth going to. Also no great Mexican.

Good Greek is at ‘Costas’ on the corner of 45th. They also have a much bigger, better, breakfast for about the same price as you’ll pay at the dorms for their rubber-like pancakes. Continental Greek is OK, not great imo. ‘Fourno’s’ up past 47th has great gyros, but I’m still unsure what their protocol is, as I’ve gone there a few times since and they said they weren’t serving. idk.

Aoi sushi is good if you like sushi. i’m not a huge sushi fan, but it’s alright ever now and then.

Also, if you just want a good burger, ‘A Burger Place’ makes great ones. It’s a cool place to just sit and relax, while eating a burger.

If you’re like me, you will soon become addicted to bubble tea if you aren’t already, so WOW and Mee Sum are your places to go. If you’re unreligious, just ignore the bible verses on WOW’s cups.

There’s probably more, but can’t think of them off the top of my head. I’ve eaten at most places on the ave, but am going to try and hit up all of them this year. If you’re looking for an upscale place though, i would look beyond the ave and even the udistrict.

@spaceneedle, hmm it’s interesting how we had different experiences at the restaurants! I guess all the times I went to Thai Tom’s, I got the more positive experience. Thanks for the other recommendations :)

does anyone know any good places for healthy eateries?
i can’t stand eating something greasy for more than 3-4 days…

The best nongreasy place IMHO is Chaco Canyon off the Ave on 50th behind Walgreens.

Garam Masala? Seriously? Maybe it’s just because I’m Indian, but I didn’t think the food there was that great.

Anyways, I would have to recommend Aladdin’s Gyrocery and Aladdin’s Falafel House. They have really good middle eastern pitas and are fairly cheap. They both have the same menu, but they’re at different locations on the ave.

I’ve heard Which Wich is decent, but I haven’t gone there yet, myself.

Also, Mandarin Chef (farther up the ave, near safeway I think) has really good mushu.

btw i think that samurai noodles is pretty good.

@sumzup – If you find an excellent Indian place, please tell us!

This Indian likes Ceders.
