Any hope for chinese student without an excellent SAT/ACT score?

HI everyone, this thread is posting for my Chinese friend, he doesnt have a CC account. He came to US about 4 years, we r friends almost for the entire high school year. He was so worried about his SAT/ACT scores, because they r not that good for Wharton school. I think he is kind active in his community, he is treasure/secretaty for 3-4 clubs, he has about 200 community service hours. By the way, his GPA is ok, 4.1 weighted and 3.6 unweighted, he told me that he has no advantage over other students, because he doesnt know anything at beginning. Now, he is try so hard on SAT/ACT, What kind of scores he have to get? CR and writing are his weak parts.

Since he only came to US for 4 years, does he need to take TOEFL?
I was wondering, is there any hope for an student like him without super high SAT scores?
Does UPENN consider his situation when they go through his application?

It sounds like you are your friend, especially with the “broken” english you talk in on the internet. First off a 3.6 GPA is not that great if it isn’t top 10%, and you don’t need an excellent SAT/ACT to get in, just a good score. Admissions is about so much stuff that just having the test scores won’t get you admitted or rejected.

me and him have the same situation, the differences are I’m Indian and I have higher test scores than him. But we both hate english, maybe that is why we became best friend.

GPA is too low. Especially if he wants to go to like Wharton. He would definitely need a really high SAT to cover for that.

What are your and his SAT scores anyway?

Your SAT scores are not low enough to discount you completely. It’ll be a struggle, and certainly apply elsewhere as well, but you exaggerate how low they are certainly.
