A girl from my school (in nova) got accepted with a 3.2 and 2050 SAT. She checked "other" as her race but I didn't think being a minority could boost you up that much. I'm just curious because this doesn't seem to match up with William and Mary's standards.

Sports? Alumni?

No sports, I’m not sure about alumni status, her only extra curricular is writing for the school’s newspaper.

You’d be surprised what minority status may change in the overall scheme of things. But pretty low GPA for WM’s standards. I think my daughter’s less than stellar SAT’s is what kept her from being accepted as opposed to waitlisted.

Those are two factors out of the million that go into college admissions. Granted, they’re both important, but you’re forgetting about essays, recommendations, ec’s, supplements, creativity, personal circumstances, etc. What does it really matter in the end? If they’re in, they’re in.

I agree with capslock in that you can’t pinpoint why a person got accepted or admitted. There are way to many factors in the college process now a days. You used to be able to tell because admissions was based on grades, SAT’s and a few outside factors. Now however with so many applicants for so few spots at so many schools, its near impossible to tell why. Outside of HYPSM a person will never get denied because of one factor anymore. It’s too much of a complicated process and it’s just irrational to think otherwise.

Did W&M letters arrive today?

They were postmarked 20th March (at least mine was) so I guess lots of people are receiving them today.

Good point, I understand that there are countless factors that go into the admission process. This case just seemed especially odd to me. I did not think an amazing essay could make up for such a low GPA and lack of extra curricular activities even if the student were Indian. And yes, admission letters came to many nova students today.

Nothing is wrong with a 2050 the 3.2 just seems a bit lower then the William and Mary averaged.

It does seem to be a scapegoat for a lot of reasons for why somebody got in and somebody else didn’t. People need to stop saying that they did or didn’t get into a school because of one reason. We are past those times.

If it helps you break out of this hypothesis, I’m white and I got in with a 1990 SAT.

Honestly i would not expect anyone to get in with only one extra curric…a friend of mine had a 34ACT and a few extra currics and got waitlisted…

All things considered, I am still just surprised by the GPA.

Me too…our valedictorian with a 4.5 got waitlisted…

Again everybody is basing this whole thing off GPA, SAT and EC’s. There are other things. And I’m not just talking about the Essay.

What else is included in the application and admissions process besides GPA, SAT, EC’s and the essay? Excuse me if I sound ignorant.

Any possible hooks. Possibly a connection with the school and not just in the way of being a legacy.I say that I mean special talent. Special talent that isn’t typical. For example in the Davidson subsection somebody brought up how one of the people on her floor was a championship dancer or something of that sort. Anything that truly differs the applicant from others. I think thats the thing that people always need to remember. With so many applicants these days, you need to do whatever it takes to make you standout from everybody else and having good grades and SAT scores will not put you on that level because honestly most schools of W&M’s caliber will receive more than enough valedictorians in there application pool.

Now that I read it it just sounds like I mean people need to put more focus on there Essay’s and EC’s but I’m just trying to say is stand out and standing out is hard to do by means of GPA and SAT scores.

She might have written an amazing essay. She does write for the school paper, right?

A friend of mine got into UNC-CH OOS with a 1100, Top 20% in Class, regular set of ECs. While our Valedictorian with a 1500, and a lot of good ECs got flat-out rejected.

Who knows why some people get in…who cares…celebrate people’s successes and just move on.
