My daughter is in the process of writing her own version of personal recommendations for each of her recommenders. This was her idea and she’s done a great job of commenting on details of each teacher’s strengths, kindnesses, fun lessons etc. They also got sincere thank you notes. The recommendations are meant to be both fun and serious. Each starts off “To whom it may concern, I am honored to have a chance to share with you some thoughts about Ms/Mr. Smith”…and continues from there.

She’s giving a copy to each of the teachers and each letter will have a CC at the bottom. She’s sending copies of the letters to the principal, superintendent (we are in a small town and she knows the sup well) and class presidents of the three classes behind her.

DS was accepted early to his first-choice college. He wrote thank-you notes to teachers and GC. We packaged the notes along with a gift card to a fancy grocery store, small box of caramels, and a jar of home-made jelly, wrapped them with cellophane and a festive bow, and gave them just before holiday break. He doesn’t have either teacher this year (both taught junior year courses).

His teachers have large class sizes and public schools in our state do not pay well…I feel that they deserved far more than we gave them, but they were very appreciative. They went out of their way to thank me at P/T conferences last week–one specifically mentioned the jelly.

Great idea to update them now and again. I will pass that along to DS.

DS wrote notes and gave the teachers gifts such as good coffee. He gave one science teacher a Big Bang theory DVD and an alum something from the school. His teachers wrote more than one letter, adjusting them for scholarship competitions and sending them throughout the year. It made sense to thank them.

I did that for my youngest out out of four children, S wrote thank you note to teachers and guidance counselor and we enclosed a Starbucks gift card.
