make sure you take a VERY GOOD look at this scholarship. you are very fortunate if you received this scholarship. U-Rochester is an excellent school. It's worth a whole lot more than a casual look "just for kicks." Do a search here on CC, check out U-R's website, do a little more research.

Congratulations on receiving the scholarship offer! I'd be able to answer any questions you have about the area for you. U of R is worth the look if you would like a nice campus in a mid-size city with a great tech industry (H is an engineer that has never had a lack for work here), arts galore (Eastman School of Music is part of the university), and horrible weather (but hey you can't have it all)

For what it's worth, UofR is a top top school. $30K to UofR is an awesome deal and I would take it unless you have something more attractive on the table.

Rochester is a great school and you can't beat its engineering program.
UR School of Engineering & Applied Sciences
What specific questions do you have? What other schools are you considering?

Did you win the Bausch and Lomb award? Every high school can submit a name to receive this award. It gets you free application to UR, and lets you COMPETE for a large scholarship should you choose to enroll.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but 30K seems like a lot for a school you haven't expressed a lot of interest in yet.

The University of Rochester is a great school. I went there over thirty years ago. At the time it was my safety school and I really was disappointed to be going there. Boy was I wrong. Since then I have been actively keeping in touch with developments there. The campus is quite nice and feels like a lac with the benefits of a major research University. If you like music, you can't beat it with the Eastman School of Music being part of the University and having a spectacular schedule of concerts of all kinds and a gorgeous theatre. May activities are on campus to keep all sorts of people interested and involved. The down sides are that the city is not too exciting and the weather is often cloudy, cold and windy and gray. But you really should check it out before turning down such a scholarship. P.S. the school has a great reputation with grad schools and employers and my friends and their children have done just a well from Rochester as those who went to ivies.
