Any Information?

This forum has been really quiet! I was accepted to Kalamazoo College with a large scholarship but I don't know much about it other than what I have read on the internet. I live in Oregon, so I won't be able to visit unless it becomes one of my top choices. Has anyone attended/ is attending and has some insight on the college?

My daughter is a freshman there. She just finished her first quarter and couldn’t be happier about her choice. Everyone seems very friendly; she was referring to “friends” in the plural within about two hours of my leaving her on orientation day. There seems to be plenty of partying but there are options for those who don’t want to (my D is a nondrinker who nevertheless likes to dance under strobe lights; plenty of opportunities). Lots of Michigan kids, for sure, but my D has quite a few friends from the West Coast (Pacific NW and California), and there are enough international students to make the place seem culturally rich. The campus is lovely. The town (about a mile’s walk from campus) is not the most happening as college towns go, but there’s a movie theatre and lots of nice shopping, as well as several nice restaurants downtown and within walking distance of campus. I did a lot of sleuthing on my daughter’s behalf to check out the teaching; I was worried because the school is so small. All reports were very favorable. My daughter’s writing improved a lot as a consequence of the one-on-one attention in her first-year seminar. The place is super chill.

Thank you! What is your daughter majoring in? I am interested in the sciences particularly biology.

My daughter will be an English major with, she thinks, a psychology minor. I think all the departments are small, which is probably both a benefit and a deficit at times (especially for the sciences). My D’s roommate is a bio major and seems appropriately challenged. I think the school works hard to help kids find mentors (the externship program, where kids can stay with an alum working in his or her chosen field to explore a career, seems pretty cool).

My D is also a freshman, chem major for now. Roommate is in bio. Both girls seem to be academically challenged, like the small classes. Neither drinks or parties, but Kzoo tries to have lots of activities on campus and Western Michigan U is right next door. She has not been bored.

Excellent student/faculty relationships in the sciences. The opportunities are there for those that seek them. Equipment and labs are up to date and surprisingly sophisticated for a small school.

S1 graduated from K in 2009, great choice for him also. Econ/business major, now working in sport administration/compliance at a D1 university.
