My son, a junior in high school, is going to the Open House on April - anyone else here thinking of going?

We are not going to the Open House, but will be touring the school with our son next week. Wheaton does not get much "press" and we are interested in hearing more.

We went last year--program is very well done.
Couldn't interest D in Wheaton, though!
We see lots of plusses

We're headed down this Friday. D is interested in international development and they have one of the few such programs at LACs. I'll be interested to hear more about the college, too.

marathonman, how did you like Wheaton itself? compared to Clark?

twr,

D preferred Clark to Wheaton slightly, but wasn't bowled over by either. We didn't get an information session at Wheaton, so our view was a little bit skewed, I think, but the lack of info about the academic programs, which have a reputation for being quite strong.

The access road to campus runs around the perimeter, so you start out by seeing the backs of buildings, which are often service entrances, and not the most attractive views. There were some very nice, newer facilities: fitness center, studio arts space, and attractive student center. Some classrooms, a cafeteria, and dorm rooms seemed old and not very well maintained. More than anything, my D came away thinking, "it's so small that you might outgrow the place by the time you're a junior."

Thanks for the observation, just curious. D was a 1st yr at Wheaton and transferred to Clark. Did great academically at both, but Clark has been much more enjoyable.

twr, why did your D transfer?

To MarathonMan88. My son is a Wheaton accepted Class of 2011 student. We put an enormous effort into the search process and we live in New England, which provided us the opportunity to talk to lots of knowledgable people, including graduates, about Wheaton. Also, I have had thirty years experience in advising people (no fee) about higher education. I will share with you my impressions of Wheaton, where my son will enroll in fall 2007. You can email me at tjpmd@cox.net or call me on my cell 401-741-0800 anytime before 9:00 pm EST. This goes for anyone else who wants my personal opinion and observations about Wheaton. Tom Paolino, M.D.
