My daughter will be a freshman at Carleton this fall. Are there any other freshman from Texas on this list?

Search for posts by fireflyscout. Her D is coming from Texas also.

Thanks Maize & Blue!

Huh? What? I'm here!

Yes, my daughter will be a freshman at Carleton, and we're from Texas.

Firefly scout,

Is your daughter doing any of the pre-frosh trips? Mine will be backpacking after doing one week of soccer pre-season camp. Do you mind saying which dorm yours will be in? Mine will be in Goodhue.

No, my daughter (for reasons unknown to me) decided not to do a pre frosh trip. We'll arrive up there on Sept 6th. DD wanted to be in Burton, but is assigned to Watson, which she barely knew existed. Oh well, at least with Goodhue and Watson being a good walk away from Sayles-Hill they may not have to worry about the "freshman 15". I also can't wait for DD to experience winter - she's the type to get cold whenever the temperature dips below 74!

My rising jr D did not do a pre-frosh trip and had no trouble making close and fast friends with those who did and those who didn't. Goodhue and Watson have lots of frosh and sophs. Have fun dropping off your D's. Tell them to be nice to the female co-coordinator of New Student Week. Vandriver: One of my D's roommates is one of their best soccer players (or so I'm told).

Maize and Blue,

Thanks for your messages. I'll definitely tell my D to watch for the co-co of new student week. Are we to assume she might be related to you?

firefly scout,

It's good to know that my D is not the only one who isn't assigned a dorm in the middle of things. I like your thinking about the freshman 15 avoidance technique! The wintry weather will definitely be a shock to our daughter as well, although she thinks she knows what cold is....who is she kidding?????

vandriver

Cold? Really? My D denies that any such inconvenience exists. I think I heard about a 5 minute dash in shorts from the rec center to Sayles in wind chill of 10 below. Also heard about trekking around in a strapless dress and high heeled sandels (no stockings) for the Mid-Winter Ball, also in sub zero temps. No problem, Mom. Jeez. Seriously, though, she doesn't wear 75% of the winter gear we bought before her frosh year (we live in a relatively mild climate). Her down liner never came out of the closet last winter.

Are either of you planning to attend Parents' Weekend?

Fireflyscout: We're going up for orientation, and since I teach, we can't go up for Parent's weekend also. Are you planning to go? If so, sorry we'll miss you!

Maize and Blue: It's good to know that kids are immune to cold weather and haven't died as a result. We have friends whose Carleton grad son streaked across campus in the middle of winter. Some things apparently have not changed since the '70's.

vandriver: I teach too! Fortunately, each year, we get a Friday in mid-October for professional development. It coincides with Parent Weekend, and I visit MN for my professional growth. ;) So, I'll be there again. I like to attend the talks by the Dean of Students and President Oden.

M&B - I hope I'll get to meet you in October! Vandriver - maybe at orientation?

Each mailing my daughter gets just makes me think how great a match Carleton is with her personality - I hope that remains true once she starts there.

fireflyscout: It's a date. I'll PM as October rolls around to arrange a meeting. I hope your D loves it there too! My D does love it, likes the challenge, and works her butt off. The intensity gets to her once in a while, but as she said to me a year ago: "Mom, you know I always pick out the hardest things to do". It's just her, and I'm proud of her fortitude. I am impressed by and thankful for her growth while at Carleton.
