Any Nigerian's in the house

Yeah, sorry i misunderstood you on the bird flu issue. I didn't read carefully when you said: "heard it hasnt reached the south, which is good. With chickens roaming about in the populated streets of lagos... " sorry..

I was in ISI actually, the sec school in UI, but of course i knew many students and experienced life there...i have a close friend in Yola - ABTI and lots in Covenant. Well, I can say UI still has a lot of prestige, but as it is federally funded, standards have really fallen, but man, it has a wonderful community of students - the smart, the musically minded, the artistic, etc. a truly vibrant student community in all respects. and it's college of medicine [UCH] is the best in West africa and among top three in africa, if not the best.

Yola seems very solid, truly international with staff from all over the world. As it is based on the american system, quite good. it's coming up...all dorms are wired, and all students are given laptops free. about $6000/annum, making it the most expensive uni in nigeria to date.

covenant has too many rules, more like a sec school, no offence, but the students themselves are complaining. no mobile phones, etc as of last year. Academics are taken seriously, but at what level? dorms are wired as well. I've been to covenant, but the problem is they take everyone who applies, we do an exam, yes, but it is of no value. a very intelligent friend of mine who attends found the academics dull and boring, although that was first year. but these guys mean business, and very soon, they'll overtake the oldies.

the major problem with most of these private unis is that they are profit making institutions. they shouldn't be...

Jrock IsI is not the bestschool in Nigeria. All of us would want to lay claim to the fact that is school is the best in Nigeria. Currently, Loyola jesuits is the best in Nigeria( That is what I read in the Newspaper) . I know a lot about african countries anyway since I want to be an entrepreneur. My geography is a little bit rusty so I can't really identify harare. Congratulations bashir on your MIT acceptance. I have only received rejections and a deferral.

ISI used to be, like i said, it's just a shadow of its former self now. Yeah, I agree Loyola is the current best.

Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe. I'm here on a gap year.

where were you deferred?

Good to hear positive word about Yola. I think it would start to draw excellent Nigerian professors from different fields all around the world to come home and make some changes.
We need more of such universities. However, as you rightly said, an institution that is run solely for the prospect of monetary gain and not profitting the students and the country at large would eventually run to the ground. In the pursuit of profits, standards are likely to be compromised and well the story goes on from there. I believe that that country needs people of character, integrity, and passion. It appears as though the leaders in the genration above us (from the police to the head of state) are just insincere. Given, education can be a major factor to change the leadership of our nation (broad definition of leadership), but personality, which in most cases is innately malicious and uncaring, will need to change

I remember a discussion I had with a couple of friends in Loyola. In asking about one anothers plans, goals and ambitions, one boy, I presume jokingly blurted out,
"In the future, I will want to get iinvolved in politics, so I can steal money just like my father"
I know that that cannot be necessarily be construed as being his true intent, but things you say jokingly affect you attitude. Oh well, we continue to pray for change.

Proud to here that Loyola is up there. Though I was rejected I was happy yo find out the a friend of mine back in Loyola, who used to sit front of me got accepted to MIT.

March 30th/31st is s-l-o-w-l-y aproaching. In approximately 1 week I will know my fate. Once again good luck to everyone.

Thanks Sefago. I still have some issues to sort out with the financial aid office though. Good luck everyone. I see light at the end of the tunnel. I'll post more stuff later..

wassup ppl. In addition to UVa I was accepted at Cornell and Columbia. I am so excited. Well all the best. Off to celebrate.

Congrats Afrikaan! I was rejected!!! But i'm in Williams!!! Thank God. sefago, how about you? heard from williams???

I got into Cornell Jrock but I have not heard any news from Williams. Williams is my first choice college.

grats sefago on Cornell. i'm happy for you. williams should have emailed you by now. i got mine this morning.

Got into princeton. Rejected at Harvard and Yale. Stanford today...

Congrats to you Featherflare, I got waitlisted at Princeton. There might still be hope but I am not counting on it.

Jrock sorry to hear about Cornell, congrats for Williams.

sefago congrats about Cornell. I would most likely be going there. I dont know if I can handle the liberal Columbia.

For now, 1 hour till Stanford.

Rejected at Stanford. But its okay. Featherflare did you get in?

I got waitlisted at stanford. No worries, im heading to princeton anyway

gratulations Afrik and Flare, cause you're both heading to great schools.

thx Afrik, i'm not sorry i was rejected at C though.

Hope we are classmates Afrikaan. Columbia is'nt really good for applied physics. You are probably going to learn more about Plato than electromagnetism.

I was accepted at Georgetown. Waitlisted at Williams and Wesleyan.

That's cool sefago:) Just keep up hope, you may be accepted off the waitlist at both wes and williams, but it's quite awkward for internationals cos you have to start processing your visa and I-20 as soon as possible.

sefago I see your point. It is a hard decision nonetheless. I seem to be greatly influenced by the belief that there is not significant difference between taking undergraduate physics at the two schools. I shall be going for a college visit before I finally make up my mind.
Congrats again to all.

Hello fellow Nigerians!! I'm Igbo. I, sadly, can't speak Igbo but I can listen!! :D

I applied to a lot of schools (I live in California btw). I was accepted to Princeton, UPenn, and all the UCs except UCLA. I was waitlisted/rejected from the rest of my schools. :( I will most likely become a Princetonian next year!!! (but I'm still kinda considering UPenn) :D

Featherflare: are you going to April Hosting? If not, I hope to see you at Princeton anyways! :)

I'm Igbo too Bookfreak lol. Yeah Igbos lol :)

Hmm....I applied to a lot to. But I got into University of Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, University of Maryland College Park, and University of Maryland Baltimore County.

I want to go to Duke soo bad, that's my first choice.

Bet you couldn't tell that I'm from Maryland! Haha....you could :)

And I assure you all, that I do have a serious side.
