Well I am one of the Nigerian diaspora. If you are a Nigerian here is the place to discuss college plans and the future of our motherland.

I am a Nigerian. What do you mean by diaspora? Are you currently living in America? I am very very very happy to see a Nigerian . I stared an african thread but nobody has replied to it. Any way what schools are you applying to.

Yes, I am currently living in the US and have been for about a year now. I was beginning to think that no one would reply to this thread, but I'm glad you did. I applied to MIT, Princeton, Caltech, Colummbia, Cornell, Stanford, and UVA. I am still praying to hear positive word from them. Where did you apply? Are you in Nigeria? and if so, how is the current Bird flu situation in Nigeria?

wat's up peeps? I'm also a Nigerian applying to most of the schools u applied to afrikaan. So where are you guys from in Nig and what sec school did u go to?
I'm a Yoruba from Kwara, went to Adesoye college. There are a couple of other Nigerians on cc but...

I am Yoruba too. I am originally from Osun, but lived in Lagidi most of ma life. I went to Loyola Jesuit College.

i am also yoruba. i applied to several schools but didn't bother to apply to any extremely competitive school because of my low SAT scores.{2100/2400). I retook the Sat in January and got 2230 but it was too late to apply to extremely competitive schools.I went to international school unilag.Afrikaan what did you score in the SATs.loyola jesuits is known as a geek school. I saw a former student in Loyola who got 1590/1600 in the SAT's and was wait listed at Harvard but accepted at Princeton and Mit. I am planning to transfer to either Dartmouth or columbia.

i ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION THAT MY STATE is ONDO. bashir7 and afrikaan what did you get in your WAEC exams. I WAS SICK DURING THE EXAM AND COULD ONLY GET 4 MEASLY A1.

count me in

well i wont say Loyola was a geek skool
i know the kid that got 1590 and he is currently in Princeton. He was down to earth and crazy, not a geek at all. In fact i always used to argue with him as to who would leave a bigger imprint on the world of sciene, and suddenly he shocks everyone with these awesome scores (JAMB-340 Sat-1590 and sat2-2350). And sefago you should have applied to those top skools- test scores are but a fration of the decision. i got 1950/2400- I am terrible at taking tests, period. I havent gotten in any, but I am still expectant. Even with my score i got a Likely letter just yesterday from UVA. I guess its past now, but I believe with your scores you should have applied with hope for improvement (collegeboard sends jan scores- i am 100% sure of that), and i dont doubt you would have gotten it. well i never took WAEC, i wish i did though, but i left after SS2, and i ame back one year when i came here so i can get awesome grades.

Sefago, I'm a terrible, terrible tester. I mean, on every practice SAT took, even under exam condition, I never scored less than 2270. oh well I got a 2070 on the real one, but combined sittings like 2100. My WAEC was not impressive as well, I had 6 A1's. I'm doing the IB on (scholarship) in the UK now, and I went to ACO on scholarship as well. Hoping for the best this yr. Yeah, I agree with Afrikaan that Greg was not a geek. There was a time we (infotech club) went to Loyola for like 3 days ( were u there that time afrikaan) and I met a lot of pple including him. He was cool. All the good SAT takers from my school are in top unis now, and they were not geeks also. So guys, where is everyone else now?
I know Afrikaan's in US now.

i believe i was, we have to vacate some dorms to make room. i remember how you guys had special food, while we the indigenes ate crap. but its all good. As bashi7 said i am in the US. anyone else? and how is the bird flu situation? any better? I heard it hasnt reached the south, which is good. With chickens roaming about in the populated streets of lagos... Well by God's grace erthing would be resolved

hi guys,
good work
keep it up.

will do. still waiting. How is the birdflu situation?

Guys, I got into MIT :). Anyone else applied?

hey guys!! grats again bash on MIT!

I'm a yoruba boy from abeokuta. went to ISI [international school ibadan, university of ibadan], the greatest school in nigeria (take me on that), tho now, it's just a shadow of its former self.

I read your essay Afrikaan on the cornell forum [also applied]. i also have the same feelings. but why are you happy that the bird flu hasn't spread to the south? we should all be apprehensive that it's even in nigeria.....
...but i don't even think nigeria is one country at the moment. the government has been very inefficient at managing the current crises, bungled the opportunity to fabricate our future path [referring to the Confab fiasco], blind to the injustice in the Niger Delta, which is not only giving us a lot of bad publicity, but speaks volumes about the level of corruption in the country; the bird flu situation is being sort of swept under the carpet, no-one is hearing anything...

I'm definitely not in support of the present administration. and we need better educated people in the govt. and i'm going to be one of them...

but one big problem is this: anytime a Nigerian comes home from abroad, it's very difficult to fit, cos ppl think you're feeling cool or something, so it's hard to get into the flow of things cos they either look down or you or look up to you, know what i mean?

sefago, few africans will identify with 'african' but more will identify with their respective countries. as an african living in a foreign african country , i've experienced first hand the admiration/prejudice some africans harbour toward other africans. we don't know each other at all, but that doesn't mean we can't work together...

you can take me on this: but in reality, there is nothing like African Union. no offence, but that's the truth. heck, it's easier for africans to obtain visas to europe or america than to their neighbouring african countries. it's a big shame.

and personally, i get mad when people say: "That's why we're African!", "Be African!", "Let's preserve the African culture!" How many africans have travelled around africa, let alone their own countries. there are vast differences....

What is the AU doing about zimbabwe, sudan, cote d'ivoire, kenya???? Why hasn't nigeria handed Taylor over to Liberia?? Honestly, it's really embarrassing.

I was rejected from MIT and Caltech-I heard the 2 bad news within the same hour. Still looking up though, God has other plans for me.

sorry to hear that Afrikaan. Keeping my fingers crossed for you for Cornell. GO BIG RED. did you apply to CAS?

Oh, no. You misunderstood me. I am not happy about it being in the country at all. But I feel that speading to the over populated cities in the south would more disastrous than the effects on the North. I figured that they will be hiding the Birdflu situation. I get more information about Birdflu in Nigeria from BBC and CNN than from the Nigerian online newspapers.
I agree with you views on how one feels when they go abroad, its either admiration or belittling
ill be back got to get to church. peace

Yes I did apply to CAS. Thanx, and I hope i get in.

Truly, the "Africa" stereotype here is insane. Sometimes people ask me if I have met their friend in Kenya. Asides from the limited Geography classes on Massai and a couple of tribes, I remain almost entirely oblivious to neighboring African countries.

Nigeria is a country in need, I can only hope and pray that our generation can make changes.

So Jrock you went to UI in the good old days. Do you know If the UI then is comparable to the new university in Yola, or Conventant, or any of the new universities now?
