Any one considering Willamette

^We had every intention of applying for the scholarship loan, but realized too late there was a deadline. I think they said it was for families who had been negatively impacted by the economy, maybe you haven't been as negatively impacted as some?

Lyre--guess not--but I was hoping--just would have made it feel better over all. This is our second kid and the first went to a spendy LAC and we have barely recuperated. Now she is planning on vet school but that will be on her own.

^I know ... it's really hard supporting kids through college. This is my second kid entering college as well. I was definitely expecting a little more from Willamette. It seems like a great place, but I'm not sure yet where my D#2 will end up ... unfortunately money is a big issue.

Did someone here get any need-based aid or just merit?
I finally got my package, where it said I received 14k merit aid.
That's awesome but not nearly enough in order to make this school affordable...

D got a nice package of need and merit aid.

S did too.

D did too but I think she is notifying them today of her decision to not attend :( I am mourning this one for sure. Sure wishe I could say

AH hello Madeline, yes this is historymom and would you please give my d's FA package to the following: oregon101S, and lyre and oh yes please give her spot to..." But it just doesn't work that way.

I feel silly haunting this forum now but maybe she'll change her mind. I just think she likes UP more and I love it but to turn down WU just seems like such a waste.

^Awww... thanks historymom! It's the thought that counts. :)

UP sounds pretty great too ... my D has a friend going there.

Hey--UP is a very good choice--but am sorry that we will not be having coffee at parents weekend in the fall. Still know we are all here if you need us for any help or info about PDX. Keep up posted.

FWIW My D did not elect to attend the college I liked best and chose W several years back. so far so good; she's happy there and that is what counts. :D

I got 14k in merit and no FA. EFC is 0, so I gues... goodbye, Williamette...
Best of luck to those who will attend...

so sorry simply lily--let us know where you end up and good luck!

simply lily - That's really too bad ... EFC is 0 and no FA?? I think you should appeal if you really want to go there.

No need-based aid with 0 EFC? That doesn't sound right-- have another look.

There's some info on loans, but only 14k of actualy aid. Don't get me wrong; it's very generous and I certainly don't feel like I deserve a full ride - but noble thoughts are miles away from actual ability.

Vassar it is, then. Thanks for all your help, though!

hiii i currently live in the UK and attend university in Plymouth. Devon along the coast, and have been acceppted to study at willamette next year, however i am petrified!! I was just wondering if anyone could tell me some information about Willamette, and the surrounding area. I have only visited america once. Thank you!

Well, coming from the UK you certainly won’t be put off by the weather! D is currently a junior there and loves the kids. They really are a very friendly bunch and there always seems to be tons to do on campus. You can look at the website as to dorms and how many share a bathroom. The city of Salem is small and easy to get around even without a car. I really don’t think you will have a problem. Friendly people are always welcomed! Best of luck. My D is dying to go to the UK someday!

rgurluk:

As an American who’s lived in London for the last five years (and will be a freshman at Willamette this fall), and sort of has a foot in both worlds, I may be able to answer some questions (?). First, the weather is not that great either in Oregon and in the UK, it definitely rains more in Oregon, although it does not get as cold in the winter, or as dark. Because of all this rain, the Pacific Northwest is very green, and geographically coastal and semi-alpine. It is a much more mountainous region than anything you’ll find in Britain.

I visited Willamette last summer, so I know a little bit about the dorms. Kaneko is the most modern and highly sociable, and will probably be the one I go out for. Lausanne is nice too, as is Matthews. The best part about Willamette is the feeling of community that is immediately apparent just stepping on campus. It feels very friendly and almost “cozy”. And of course it’s a top ranked US college, so you’ll be getting a great education. And if you, like me, have an interest in American politics, the Oregon state capitol building is literally across the street from campus.

Salem itself is not that exciting a city in and of itself, but the good thing is it’s proximity to Portland, which is great.

The drinking age in all states is 21, which may take some getting used to, but generally colleges in the US are not known for being exactly dry, among underage and legal students alike. Steer clear of the substance free dorms and you should be fine.

Generally speaking Americans are very friendly, especially people from the Pacific Northwest, who are particularly down to earth. If you’re used to the British reserve, expect something quite different. Most Willamette students are from Oregon, California, and Washington, so a Brit will be seen as a rarity and become an instant conversation starter for you.

Even though the Pound has taken a beating lately against the Dollar, you’ll still find that things in the US are usually cheaper than in the UK, especially things like clothes and consumer electronics. Though be aware that DVDs you buy in the UK will not work in the US, and vice versa.

I hope this VERY brief primer to Oregon and the US has been of some help…if you have any more questions please ask here or PM me. I look forward to hopefully meeting you next year.

Thank you very much that’s amazing information, and makes me feel much better about going, i’m 20 so won’t be quite a freshman or a fresher as we call it in the UK! I need to go on the website and findd out about the dorms, I head about one dorm being by a railway line that can be a bit noisy, but i am definitely up for a sociable dorm. I hope to see you this year i am starting in september 09 fingers crossed. my email is littlemiss1234■■■■■■■■■■■■ so hope to keep in touch. Many Thanks.

Almost all the dorms are near the RR line :frowning: I wouldn’t let that bother you. Ones furthest away - Lausanne and Downey - but you can still hear the train whistle.
