You should call them or have your parents call them and ask.

Try again, Doc, I cleared it about a half hour ago because it was loading up. The other person I wrote to this evening was chock full of information and was using it like it was instant messaging! :)

That's terrible...one day!?!?!??!

If the conventional wisdom is that you have to convince the schools that they are your first choice and if they take you off the waitlist you will almost certainly accept, then how could you at the same time tell the school you need to do more due diligence and need a lot of time to think about it. Seems a little inconsistent. Given the limited number of people who will get in off the waitlist it seems to me that pursuing a waitlist situation when you are not highly confident you would enroll is potentially a waste of both yours and the schoools time and a disservice to others on the waitlist. Remember the schools at this point will be trying to fill their classes in a limited period of time and if somebody on the waitlist turns them down they need to go to another person on the waitlist. Giving everybody off the waitlist an extended period of time to do due diligence and consider the opportunity just doesn't work from a practical perspective.

how do they contact? e mail or a call (even internationals?)

Good question: Will they call or e-mail?

Choate said they would call, but only in the state of an acceptance.

My experience with waitlist at Mercersburg:
1. Phone call to ask to be on waitlist; express astonishment that not accepted; this was applicant's #1 choice; admissions person wants to know where else applicant was accepted and how much FA received; states that they have to wait for someone who is accepted with that level of aid to say they are not coming in order to make room for applicant;
2. Applicant writes letter updating Mercersburg of recent academic success and accomplishment;
3. Applicant attends Visiting Day at another school that enthusiastically accepted him with a lot of FA; has fine time;
4. At parents' request, applicant's headmaster calls Mercersburg to ask about the applicant's status;
5. The day before parents have to send in deposit to ither school (see item 3), Mercersburg calls with offer of admission and slightly more FA than the other school;
6. Parent notifies applicant of good news;
7. Applicant announces that he wants to attend the other school (see item 3), having enjoyed Visiting Day and felt that this school really wanted him;
8. Parent emails M-burg with applicant's decision;
9. Headmaster of applicant's school receives call from puzzled M-burg Admissions Committee wanting to know what happened;
10. Parents receive call from Headmaster, wanting to know what happened.
11. Parent explains (truthfully) that applicant now wants to attend the other school.

Which he did.

And the moral of this story is -- this school turned out to be GREAT. Hazmat, who occasionally posts here, sent me private mail about this situation when it unfolded two years ago and expressed approval for the "other school." So, if you do not come off that waiting list -- it might not be the end of the world.
As time has gone by, I think the other school was a MUCH better fit than M-burg.

Just my 2 cents.

And another thing -- it is a whole different experience when you require a lot of FA and are just an average good student. There were probably other kids applying who could pay much more and my sense is that those kids were accepted.

Hazmat has been a wonderful contributor behind the scenes on CC for a long time.

It is terriffic that your average good student found a place that was a great fit and financially feasable.

I can say the same about my average good student D as well. Another interesting FA story, but for another time and definitely off-line.

You're such a tease, Goaliedad! :)

what goaliedad???? you mean you're not going to spell out your family finances for us here?!?!?!

i just thought of a new subforum for the prep school board: "fa chances"

parents will post all their pfs data, identify the schools their kids are applying to, and ask what their chances are of getting fa and how much! it will be optional to include your ssn.

Hehe, D'yer. ;) Did you see Linda S's predicament?

This thread begs the question ... if you were accepted to and leaning towards one school, and at the 11th hour , another (similar) school to which you had been waitlisted came through with a few more dollars .. would you switch? How much?

We heard a story this week (fairly credible source) about a student last year who was WL'd at a B/S, and then was offered a full ride in August. Yes .. I said an un-hooked, un-quarterback, un-tuba playing full ride.

Wow. Was it a needblind school? That's strange though because it was off the WL and I thought they used all their funds before.

from experience...if you are waitlist at AESDC just don't torture yourself on this CC.Pretend that it is over and bust the top out of your current school year .Break the CC habit or this small set back will haunt you more than it should.You will not hear about Waitlist until 04/15/07 unless uncle Bill sent a check for $1mm and your stats are competitve even then it is a lottery probability.Don't be confused that these two criteria are not mutually exclusive.

Guys, my story isn't so much about how much we were awarded, but how long it really took to sort things out. Lets just say it can be months at some schools. And I'm not talking about the one my D is enrolled in.

And with any FA contract, you will note that there is always a confidentiality agreement regarding the amount awarded (which I always adhere to). I hope some of you folks who posted numbers earlier were making yours up!

Schoolsearcher,
My response does not beg the question! At the last hour -- literally, the day before I was sending off the deposit to The Other School, the DUE date for the contract (same date as M burg's), my son was taken off the waitlist and offered more FA. And he said no! A lot can happen between the time you learn you are on a WL and the time you are offered admission. Olivia 567, the Admissions lady told me that they had to wait for someone who had been accepted with the same amount of aid to decline their place before they could offer it to my son. I also think -- and I could be wrong -- that if we had not needed FA that he would have been admitted in a heartbeat.

I don't think there is going to be any waitlist movement until after april 10th. the waitlist offers that my son received specified to let the school know by april 10th if he wished to remain on the waitlist. they need to know how many students have accepted and if there will be any room.

Our WL letter said not to expect to hear from them until after April 10. On the other hand it asked for a list of schools that my D had been accepted to and the deadline (duh April 10 for everybody) for us to give those schools our decision and deposits.

This would lead one to believe that if the school really wanted a particular student (from their WL) that they would have to have some communication before April 10, before deposits are sent in elsewhere.

On the other hand, my guess is that schools have not heard back from 100% of their accepted students. With revisit days so late (ours is next week) .. that only gives students with multiple acceptances a few days to render a final decision and mail in the forms. This gives schools a very small window of time to complete their classes. They must be working off of some historical models to get the numbers they need.

I imagine that the admissions office would be a very busy place the week of April 10, with lots of last minute dealing. I wonder how many parents will try to wage financial aid bidding contests? Hmmmmm ????

A little late here...
but I got waitlisted from two schools-Choate, Deerfield. I did not pest them, just politely told them I'm interested, and now I'm wondering what to do. I really don't like my public high school, but I might not have a choice. For these specific schools does anyone know how many people are on the waiting list and typically how many get accepted? Do my chances look good? Or should I just give up and accept that I'm pretty much done for?
Any input would be great--negative or positive.

Sorry, because I'm kinda confused. Some are like JUST WAIT. and others are like give it up go to your private high school. it sounds ridiculous, but we all want to know. ARGHHH! SUSPENSE.
