You don't have a great chance of getting in off of the wait list at top-tier schools like Choate and Deerfield. If you have a favorite you should contact that one and make sure that they know that you really, really want to attend there.

This is the week to make your move. Tell them you'll come if they say you can. Remind them what you bring to the table...because one of those things you remind them about may be something that they realize later on this week they really, really need badly. If they just so happen to need a person who can divide any whole number by pi -- and you can do that -- you've got a prayer.

It requires a busload of luck. But you can also help create your luck. And this is the week when you want to hang an upside down horseshoe, find 4 leaf-clovers, stay up late looking for shooting stars, and letting schools know that you're the person to fill that void they just might have.

Thanks so much for your input. I have heard of people who got off the waitlist, but yes the chances are slim and its mostly luck. I am keeping my fingers crossed, but not expecting a miracle.

Waiting sucks.

do they ever tell you if you're not getting off?

Yes, they do tell you. Two years ago my daughter was waitlisted at Choate. In early June she got a letter telling us that there was no room for her.

ARGH! I called Deerfield wondering the status of everyone and they said as of now there is NO SPACE! FOR ANYONE! I don't know if it is a lie, but I was so upset!!! why don't they just rip out my heart?

BUT--------> for those of you who are waitlisters at deerfield, its a VERY VERY small group, and the only reason that we all have deerfield waitlists is because we are all GENIUSES and they are losers not to accept us. Haha just kidding. They have a list for freshman boys and one for girls, and etc. They said the list will remain until JULY! I am not going to get in... it was my dream school. and choate doesnt look good either.

Im crying right now. I thought wait list meant i had a CHANCE.

Did you get into any other prep schools, babydoll?

Aw.... I'm so sorry!

this board seems well represented on the deerfield wait list - imho, i don't think their wait list is as short as they lead people to believe

you know, i honestly thought i was going to go to deerfield....
until i revisited.
what i found was a bunch of jockey homogeneous white kids who weren't particularly smart and were kinda mean...
i mean, maybe thats a little bit of an exaggeration, but hey, that was my impression.
so i chose choate. GO CHOATE!!

Feel your pain..my daughter is on the wait list at FOUR preps!! Youzy...
its very depressing as our Safe school is ONE of the wait lists...am I a bad parent or what? yeesh...walking on eggs this week hoping we hear something good...and applying to schools that I should not have cancelled with after some admissions counselors told us my kid had everything they wanted and then this...uggg..

waitlistman - maybe your daughter is so brilliant that the schools think she's alreayd been snatched by another? make sure they know she hasn't been!

Told them our dilemma..hate all this tellem its your top choice..makes them seem immature and egotistical...do you think they all confer?
Yeesh...toss a coin 4 times and it lands on its side..

One of ems deerfield another Milton...oy vay...nobody very safe all top 10..

I understand that these past few years Deerfield has overbooked. Not enough beds for everyone who accepted. So they started cutting down big time on their acceptances. Even after they cut down they were still getting more acceptances than they expected. Supposedly this past year they had 120 beds and sent out only 120 acceptances. It is the most desired BS these days, in 5 years that could all change. I use to say the only thing in Deerfield was Eaglebrook (still do!).

Ops, if you're correct that's a very interesting observation. School my daughter applied to a couple of years ago had the exact same situation. The year before she applied, they had a much higher yield than they expected and ended up with more kids than they really wanted. When she applied they deliberately limited their number of acceptances and then pulled a bunch of people off their waitlist, including my daughter.

BTW - Son is waitlisted at Deerfield, so we also have an interest in what happens.

To clarify, it was 2006, how they'll do it this year I don't know but suspect the same. In 2005 they accepted 10-20 kids more than they had beds for and still got burned. Its not a risk for them because there are plenty of well qualified kids on the waiting list. Don't they tell you where he is on the waitlist? You should have already let them know that Deerfield is the #1 choice. Good luck and of course there are plenty other really great schools out there.

I have been told by the admin office that Middlesex has about 20 or so students on the waitlist of which some years they take zero off and some years maybe one or two. Not the best of news

Unfortunately, I was just in contact with Choate, and they are fully enrolled and taking no one off of the wait list. We had even withdrawn our request for FA, but guess they over enrolled as well. Sad news, but time to move on.

from any of the top 10 schools?? Are they all overbooked.....
