Any opinions on High Rise #5 dorm?

a quintuplet @ high rise 5 sounds to me like you’ll be in a lounge…

a big 15 x 15 room with bunked beds :(

Living in a suite may not have been what you were hoping for, & it probably will not be the same experience as living in Donlon, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be a bad experience. The big difference is that in a suite you don’t have to leave your suite & socializing might be less impromptu. All that means is that if you want to hang out/socialize, you probably need to make plans. With texting, finding people & making plans isn’t really difficult.

unless the people in your suite are like totally into a different scene than you are…you’ll do fine socially…

donlon is overrated and noisy…

The suites don’t even have a common room, right?

here goes, guys:

I lived in a double in Jameson (High Rise 1), High Rise 5’s twin. As far as I know, both buildings are identical and your ID card will get you into either (although, I only ever visited HR5 once…and that was just to see if my card would work there). The floor level is set up G (ground) through 6, although the sixth floor is just the sky lounge and the faculty-in-residence apartment (Brisa and Iago are awesome! …and Brisa makes THE BEST cupcakes! Don’t miss out on them).

Here’s a picture of a surprise party that was thrown for two of my friends on their birthday:

you can see a little of the second floor lounge…not much, though. sorry.

Here’s a picture of my half of my double:

Eventually, I raised my bed (if yours is metal, you won’t be able to do this, though, sorry), and created a study space underneath.

Here’s one of my roommate’s side:

Yes, that’s a narwhal (and in case you’re wondering, my friends were trying to install a shelf because my room came without any…not even a book shelf, although every other room in Jameson came with them. Go figure).

Here are a couple of pictures of the view of North Campus from the Sky Lounge:

Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of the singles or triples, but triples are only slightly bigger than doubles (Sorry to those of you stuck in them) and singles are about half the size (they’re actually pretty big for singles…MUCH larger than singles in Mews and even some in Dickson). There’s not much to do in the High Rises…Some genius decided to put three flatscreen tvs in the sky lounge, so they have no walls separating them (omg, it was so terrible trying to watch Glee over Lost and various sports games) and there are no pool tables or ping pong tables or even board games (very much unlike other dorms).

The actual set up of the floors is a little awkward. You have to take an elevator to get to any floor from the ground because there are no stairs excluding the fire escape. However, you’re free to take the fire escape down, but it leads straight outside (not through the lobby), so it’s to your benefit to take the elevator if you’re not leaving the building (i.e. doing laundry or visiting a groundie/someone who lives on the ground floor). Also, each floor has three sub-levels. I wish I had a picture to show you, but basically, you step off the elevator and can go either left or right. Depending on the floor, one way will take you straight to suites 3 and 4, and the other will take you to a choice between suites 1 and 2 (downstairs) or 5 and 6 (upstairs). Yes, weird, I know. You just have to see it for yourself. Each suite has four rooms-two singles, a double, and a triple-plus a bathroom, which contains two sinks, a toilet, and a shower. There’s also a tiny alcove in each suite, but your technically not allowed to place anything in it (so idk what it’s good for). Feel free to PM me or continue replying to ask any more questions, and I hope that helped. :)

Blastoise summed it up nicely. i lived in a triple last year in High Rise 5. it was bigger than i expected at first, but i had really messy roommates so in the end i had little to no room. the bathroooms suck really bad. up until like winter break we only had hot water, really hot water, but they’ve fixed this now. its set up in “suites” but its not as if you have a common room or lounge for your suite. the bathroom in each suite has two sinks, one toilet, and one shower (with tub). every suite has a triple, one double, and two singles. there’s a small closet for the suite but i didnt use it at all.

with that said, it was a great dorm for meeting people. i never hung out on my floor much because i didnt fit in with the people there, but i spent all my time on the floor below mine. you form groups and get close to people in the same suite/floor (not that it’s not the case for other dorms, but less so – esp balch etc.).

This is going to sound like a weird question, but does each room have a window?

the walls are all brick i thought, at least in the doubles, i dont think the pictures really show that. at least, thats how my friends room was.

malan89, excluding the bathrooms, yes, all rooms have windows.

Feral24, yeah, the doubles and triples are definitely all brick. The singles have one or two walls that aren’t.

the rooms arent very sound proof though :(

also, as for the socializing in these dorms, it goes by unit, not by suite as much. You will probably make good friends amongst your unit mates but maybe not with your suite mates. The units seemed to me to be fairly cohesive.

I’m in Jameson, but does anyone know how many suites are on each floor? Also, is it coed by suite or by floor?

there are 6 suites on each floor, 7 ppl in each suite, so there are 42 ppl on each floor plus the RA. the floor’s coed. suite is not coed.

how are the RAs overall? can we pregame or are they going to be hard asses?

cornellhotelie2, have you taken into consideration that if they’re caught allowing you to drink, they’d be in serious trouble, too? Of course they’re going to be hard on you. With that said, though, people do drink in the dorms, just not openly. If your RA catches you, you’re going to get JA’d, so you might as well just go to frat parties. Alcohol is free there, too.

if an RA catches you, they will JA you. but some RAs will actively go out to purposely find people to JA, whereas others will be chill and not try to watch over you all of the time

I’m not talking like doing shots outside their door, but just having a few beers with some friends in our room before headed out for the night. Coming back for the night how strict are they if you have been drinking? If you just mind your own business and keep it down are you usually ok? I understand they have a job to do of course, just trying to get a feel for the rules they put in place etc.

They’re not going to do anything if they don’t see you actively participating in drinking. You can come back as drunk as you want. If you’re noisy/puking everywhere/having sex in the middle of the hallway, though, you’ll get yelled at, of course. Know your limits and how you deal with drinking. If you’re a loud, obnoxious drunk, do everyone a favor and just stay out all night. My RA didn’t take too kindly to being woken up at 4 in the morning to tell everyone to shut up.

understandably so, thanks for the info

I read on the website, that each of these dorms holds 200 people, but it looked like they had nine floors. If there are 42 people on each floor wouldn’t that be closer to 400 people?
