there are only 5 floors and the sky lounge. one side of each floor has “half floors” so that’s why from the picture it looks like there are 9 floors. it’s confusing to explain, but you’ll see once you get there.

the best way to pregame is to take some shots…keep it low-key…

the less trash you have (1 bottle of vodka/tequila vs cans/bottles of beer) the better :)

Bumping this thread with a new questions:
I have a possible switch from Townhouse H to a single in High Rise 5 - what do you think?

i would do it

in high rise 5 you will have more girls around than townhouses…

townhouses are usually jock girls

I lived in a townhouse and I know High Rise really well. I would definitely switch to that single in High Rise, unless you are an athlete. The townhouses are definitely full of athletes, and the teams often form their own social groups.

Yes, you will have less space in HR5, but you will not have to share it with three strangers, except the bathroom (which you will not have to clean, unlike the townhouse ones which get cleaned only once a month). And, of course, the lounges will be for everyone.

I found HR5 to be much more sociable than the townhouses as well, though that can vary by suites/halls/floors.

red2013’s statement is accurate.

if you want more of a traditional dorm experience go with the hr5.

My deal fell through, but I did get an offer from the official Housing people - switch from Townhouse to a triple in Balch…what do you think?

that one is kind of iffy. triples tend to suck.

My son had a double in Jameson high rise his freshman year. It’s a strange setup that isn’t very conducive to socializing, and he really didn’t like it very much. However, his roommate turned out to be one of his best friends, someone he is likely to stay in touch with for years if not a lifetime. So, on balance it worked out well! Good luck.

socializing in jameson or high rise 5 is more about whether or not you get lucky with your suite/floormates…

Hmm, that triple in Balch is a tricky choice.
I am not as familiar with Balch, but here are some important cons and pros from my opinion. I hope this helps!

Pro Balch: you are super close to central campus, and you definitely feel the difference in distance between townhouses and Balch (about 8 minutes); you are in one of the most known buildings at all of Cornell; you have Tatkon right below you to study, chill in; I have heard (not been in one myself) that the triples are pretty nice in size
Cons Balch: the rooms vary so some rooms will be much nicer and some will be more simple and a bit more rundown; most important thing to me though-you will be surrounded by girls at ALL times with occasional guy visitors while in your dorm

Pro Townhouse: you have a rather spacious living area (useful if you want to study for finals there rather than dragging yourself to an overcrowded library, granted your room/suitemates are not obnoxious), a separated bathroom (shower and sinks in one room and toilet in a tiny room with its own door) shared regularly by only four people; guy and girl townhouses alternate so you are surrounded by four guys on the right and on the left; you have a community center, which has a big open room with a tv and some game tables and a couple study rooms; oh, and you have your own kitchen and fridge to share with four people
Cons: townhouses can be really isolating for some people since you are in a more intimate setting with four people and can’t step out of your room and see a variety of hallmates; also, if you are not an athlete you might feel like a minority depending on how they assigned housing this year, have to try harder to meet people; laundry rooms are outside either down stairs or on the side of buildings and have to be unlocked (really stinks when it’s raining/snowing/sleeting and you have to get it done); you have to clean the kitchen by yourself and if the bathroom is cleaned only once a month it’s kind of like a biohazard; you are also further away

Again, it’s kind of your gamble. It’s all about luck when it comes to housing.

I lived in a single in HR5. It was roomy enough for me. A friend from Yale who visited me and had his own single said mine was huge compared to his. So I guess that’s good.

By the way, the foosball and ping pong tables suck at HR5. In case you’re into that kind of thing.

“By the way, the foosball and ping pong tables suck at HR5. In case you’re into that kind of thing.”

What the heck? Jameson didn’t even have the luxury of either last year. Jameson didn’t have anything but 3 tvs in the sky lounge last year… I thought the high rises were supposed to be twins. :C

During the housing lottery, I spoke with one of the head housing guys who asked me how I liked living there. I explained the lack of entertainment compared to the other dorms and he said that they’d see about “fixing the situation” for this year’s freshmen. A lot of good that does me. haha

I have a decent foosball table we never use here at home that I could easily throw in the back of the swagger wagon. PROBLEM SOLVED.
