I'm from Washington state, and I just found out that I don't meet the L&S English requirements for CAL even though I took all of the core English courses at my college. None of them were met. I called them, and they said that I have a very slim chance of getting in due to that, and my application is in the pile of ineligiblity. I have a 4.0 GPA and a lot of EC's. Oh, and I'm a math major.

I'm looking for hope. Did anyone here get into UCB or UCLA without meeting these requirements? Thanks.

And if you got rejected due to this, please respond, too. =)

hi soreadytogetout,
how did you find out that you didn’t meet L&S English requirement? i’m Virginia and also applied to Cal’s L&S and thus i know i’m gonna need to meet that English requirement. I sent two of my English courses (college composition 1 and 2) evaluations by my english professors, which I obtained the form on myBerkeley. Did they notify you that you are not meeting such requirement?

If you do not fit the English requirements you’re unfortunately going to have a slim chance. The reason is that all transfers need to fulfill the English requirement as well as Math and so on (California has the IGETC that is recommended of fulfillment of lower division work). Also California Community College students have the benefit of top priority in transferring and CSU’s and UC to UC transfers as well over out of state applicants. Rarely out of state students are able to transfer even with outstanding GPA’s.

On average at least close to 100 for both UC Berkeley and UCLA accept out of state students. While the other UC’s are more inclined to accepting out of state students.

Hi getitdid,

I called the L&S office, and they told me that my 2 evals don’t meet it. My friends’ didn’t either. Efffffferrrrrr.

*. i’m so screwed. *********.

Just to note,

The IGETC at some California Community Colleges does NOT fulfill the L&S English requirements. If you applied to a major in the L&S, you are not required to complete IGETC and instead can complete Berkeley’s reqs.

Hey Supa_Ramga,

So that’s a good thing? Yeah, out of state people don’t have to complete the IGETC, but you need to have the L&S requirements done. I have everything except my English classes don’t match Berkeley’s and probably won’t match UCLA’s. I’m so screwed. I just found out I got rejected to one of my top colleges today. I’m going to get rejected to UCB and UCLA, too, and won’t have anywhere to go. =(

Thanks.

Out of stater won’t require to do the IGETC(basically they cant even work on the IGETC). Out of stater who applies to Cal’s L&S has to follow their L&S requirement which includes english, math and foreign language. Once you submitted your application, don’t worry about it for now. There is nothing you can do right now but wait. No one knows how the admission process will go despite the fact that you have a very slim chance. I’m in the similar case as I applied to Cal from Virginia state. I haven’t called them to verify because I know I can’t do anything right now regardless of what they would tell me. You are in the state of Washington and haven’t applied to UW as your safety? Well, cheer up. The decisions will be out in 2 weeks and this waiting game will be over.
