Hi everyone. I have a few questions.
I'm starting Santa Monica College this coming winter semester (which I heard they're cutting down to 50% of the classes because of budget problems - that doesn't help me much nor does it help anyone else, I'm sure). I was late on registering for Fall because of personal reasons so instead of sitting idly by, I am currently taking 4 courses at UCLA Extension that will count as undergraduate credit (have any of you done this? any advice on this, or feedback from your experience?) My question is as follows:

I am planning on transferring to UCLA as a psychology major. I contacted UCLA and was informed that in order to be eligible to enroll as a transfer student at their school I must complete 4 general education classes, as well as the necessary one math course and TWO English courses. The problem is that, according to my calculations, by the time I have to apply for UCLA, I will have all that done MINUS one English class. I'm kind of worried about this. What do you guys think -- will there be room for me to explain that I am in the process of completing that last English course in the following weeks, along with the rest of my IGETC credits. Which leads me to this -- I will have 42 units out of the 60 IGETC units done by the time I apply. Will these units, with a strong GPA, and an explanation on what's happening with that final English class help me get in? I fear I won't get in just because of that stupid one English class I won't be able to complete on time!

If your calculations are correct and you would not have that one English class, I say that they would probably require you to have that English class. I’ve heard a story in which one student could not apply because he was missing one Art course from IGETC.

So finishing IGETC is pretty crucial for most L&S majors. 2 English classes, math after college algebra, 2 science ( life and physical i believe ? ) + a lab, and a foreign language ( 1 yr college/2 yrs HS ) are the requirements to transfer for L&S majors.

Let’s say you’re applying with 42 out of 60 units, you’re fine. You pretty much have until the end of the upcoming Spring to finish the rest of the 60.

Ex:
Fall 09 ( apply with 42 out of 60 units )
Winter 09/10 ( update your application with Fall 09 upgrades )
Spring 10 ( Finish the remaining 60 units )

That’s how the application process works for most people.

IGETC is not required but is strongly recommended. Aka it will be much tougher to be accepted without IGETC by the end of your Spring Term. But not impossible…
