Any point in retaking ACT?

So I got my scores yesterday, and I was really happy with them.

C: 34
E: 35
M: 33
R: 36
S: 32

However, when I signed up to take the test, I never expected to do this well. I figured I'd get a 30 or so and end up retaking it later on (I'm a rising junior). I opted not to take the writing/essay portion. But now, I'm really happy with a 34 and I don't know if I'll ever be able to do this well in reading, english, or math again (I could probably improve science, but I don't think my composite would go up).

Is there any point retaking it in order to get an essay score?

Well since most schools require writing you are probably going to have to retake it. Also send an email or something to your school and see if they just take one writing and your best composite score an not just one particular test.

Yeah, I'm sorry, you should probably retake it with the writing portion. However, since your scores are already good, and most times people get a higher ACT score when they take it the 2nd time, I'd say you might even improve to a 35. And if you don't.....you could always just not send the score or just use the writing portion as viciouspoultry suggested.

I would expect that you should plan for a retake of the SAT. Most schools that require achievement tests require the writing portion. The reason I say plan to retake is also because you are only a rising junior. viciouspoultry's advice would work for you better if you were further into the application process and new what schools to which you will be applying and therefore the schools to contact for their policy. Odds are there are going to be schools between now and your final applications that you are not thinking about at the moment. Their policies would not have been able to be checked. As for the advice about only sending the writing score of a future test, I don't think that is possible. You would have to send the whole other test. Whether a college is willing look at the C from one and W from another, I don't know. I would not want to count on it. Either way congrats on the score, in all likelihood you will do even better the next time.

So I will have to retake it? That's unfortunate, but I guess I can use the opportunity to brush up on science and maybe get a 35 (although I'm never going to get that perfect reading score again :().

You did so bad. Your scores were seriously terrible, I think you should be embarassed about posting them here.
/end sarcasm

...What do you expect when you post scores like that on here? You know they are really good. So you really need people to tell you that you did amazing? I really do not see the point of a thread like this. Yes a lot of colleges do require the writing portion of the ACT, so you probably will need to take it again. But I just do not understand why people who get really good scores, like almost perfect, feel the need to post them here and then have the nerve to say that their scores were not good enough. Do you know how many people would kill to have a score half as good as yours? I see what you were trying to ask but I think what you did was rude. And I am sorry that I am posting this here in your thread, but it is not directed just at you. It is directed at all the people on here who get 2390s on the SAT and say they need to retake it or people who get all 36's except one section and say they need to retake the ACT. You are all God and us ordinary people have no right to be in your presence. It just makes me really mad about alot of people who post here and are like that. You guys should make your own thread where you can post your really SAD 2300's and then cry to each other about how bad you did and how you will not get accepted into every Ivy League school and MIT. It just makes me sick.

Wow, God forbid I should ask a question.

I have just as much right to post my scores as anyone else - they're important to the question because normally one wouldn't retake a 34, but would retake, say, a 26.

Well, let me apologize for scoring well. I must be a terrible and pathetic person to be concerned about college, right?

And you think I'M rude? I'm sorry you haven't gotten the score you want, but I don't think that justifies a personal attack on those who do score better than you.

^ he didn't say his scores weren't good enough. he's just worried he won't do as well when he takes it again with writing, which is always possible. you seem bitter man. chill. why are you on this forum lol?

to answer the OP's question properly...
yes you will have to retake the ACT with writing because most colleges require it with writing. however, i'm sure they will consider both of your scores even if you did poorly when you retake. good luck man!

I have gotten the score I want and im not mad because I scored lower than you did, I scored higher if you really wanted to know. Butthats not why I am posting this and no, I do not care that you did well. Congratulations that you did well. I just find it shameful that you feel the need to post your amazing score and then have the nerve to say that it is not good enough. I would never say something like that. And I stated that it was not a personal attack on you it just happened to make me so mad that I finally just decided to post it in your thread because I am angry at many people who post here.

there are people who do act as you described on CC. however i don't think highhopes is one of those people. he seems actually surprised by his score and is just discouraged that he may have to retake. i understand where you are coming from but i don't think your post was necessary.

umm... the person never said that the score was BAD, just asking if the ACT should be retaken because, though scores were high, he/she didn't do the writing portion.

so yeah, like everyone else said, you should probably take the writing portion because a lot of colleges require it. hey, you never know, you could do a little better with some knowledge in junior year! and take it at an easier testing date, just for extra cushion. good luck!

well if u say u cant do that well on reading and english again, y would u think of retaking it in the first place? u kinda just answered ur own question rite there.

I just thought this was an ACT preparation forum not a "brag about your ACT scores and how much better you did than everyone else" forum. I just think that a lot of people use this forum to gloat about how good their scores were when people should be on here trying to help prepare for the ACT. Somebody should create a new separate sub-forum of the ACT prep forum.

I wasn't bragging, I was asking whether or not I should retake the test in order to get a scored essay. Read more closely next time before you so rudely point fingers at others.

Thats like going into a nursing home and asking a old man stuck in a bed for the rest of his life, who can never walk again, wether of not your almost olympic-running mile time was good enough on your physical exam or if you should retake it to get an olympic time. It may not be your intention to brag, but it sure sounds like it to certain people.

if you can get a 34 the first time, you shouldnt have to worry about dropping into the 20s. stop being so pessimistic by thinking you are going to fail again if you take it with writing. plus you dont really have a choice. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE WRITING PORTION. the essay anyway is bs. nothing like the sat essays at all. plus the english and reading sections are teh easiest. do some more practice sections. it isnt the end of the world. you arent even a junior yet...you have SO MUCH TIME (you can basically take them until oct/nov/dec of senior year).

and uscga2013...im on your side. it just makes me laugh at how pathetic people sound when they cry over a 2350 or complain when a section score is a 34 and they miss "only 1 question" <its called="" a="" curve="" everyone...get="" used="" to="" it="">...or they think that they have to take the tests over and over to get a perfect score so they can get into an ivy. NEWS FLASH: most schools actually dont care for perfect scores anyway. everyone gets them these days...its not a really unique accomplishment anymore.</its>

LOL, okay, whatever. I got my answer and I know I need to retake the ACT+Writing. Thank you, USCGA, for the unnecessary rudeness. :)

Im sorry I had to post this in your thread, but this was just the staw that broke the camels back. I have seen so many threads where people brag and I finally just cracked. It could have been any thread like this.
