I am a senior who is going to graduate from high school this year. I really want to do a post-graduate year instead of going to college straight away. My high school life had been so chaotic due to transferring to a new school, the depressing sophomore year, and crazy academics. I want to use my PG year to become more social, focus less on my academics and at least do a sport or too (haven’t joined any in the last three years), and hopefully find a direction and plan better for college. I heard many prep schools have good PG programs. Can you guys give me some recommendations? Do you know where I can find information about this?
Also, is it okay if I am one year older than everyone else by the time I go to college?
Have you considered study abroad programs like AFS instead?
@ChoatieMom I have decided to apply to two or three BS for PG year, but I don’t know which schools will be a good fit for me. I have looked on some of the boarding schools’ websites for PG year info. They give very limited information about what their PG year is like.
@siliconvalleymom I checked that out already. It seems like I can’t apply to any of the scholarships because the deadline is already past. I don’t know whether attending the AFS study aboard programs without scholarships is worth the value compares to other study aboard programs.
Are you also applying to college this year? What does your family say about paying for an additional year of high school?
If you do not feel ready to go to college this fall, you can always take a gap year and work instead.
@siliconvalleymom Very sorry for the late reply. I haven’t looked at this forum for a while. Yes, I applied to colleges this year. Got into my safeties, but got waitlisted at one of the schools I want to go. I am going to go on a college tour pretty soon and see what they are like. My Dad sort of objects to the idea of taking a gap year, but my mom seems to be okay with it.
