Thoughts and advice on boarding school post graduate year!

Hi,

Just as the title says.. Does anyone have experience with applying to, getting accepted to and doing a post graduate year? All advice welcome. Thank you!

The reason for considering this is because I am considering a gap year before college. I am a senior and my GPA is 3.9 weighted, ACT 30 with some pretty interesting EC's.

A teacher suggested that I look into a PG year at a boarding school. I thought it a good idea to come here and ask. This is all new to me! Thank you.

Anyone have any information /advice or experience with a post grad year at a boarding school?

Why would you do a PG year?
Your numbers are great.

Have you ever considered doing a PG year at a British boarding school? One of my classmates did that and had a wonderful time. I’m not sure about FA, but it would be a unique experience, kind of like doing a JYA but without the pressure of having to worry about fulfilling your credits for graduation.

If you want to do a PG year here in the States, I would suggest contacting the admissions departments of several schools and asking them what the expectations for PGs are. Perhaps they can put you in touch with a current PG as well, so you can ask questions about what life is like for a PG at their school. I think it would be an interesting experience, if you want to study during your gap year rather than doing CityYear or something similar.

Is the only reason to do a PG year to enhance a resume? Is it ever done with an academically strong student? We are considering an extra year for our daughter, who is young for her grade and who doesn’t seem to be emotionally at a point where she can truly benefit from a college education. We are looking into a variety of options but wondered about this one.

I know a young woman who did this; she had gone to public HS and was a very strong student, but parents wanted her to gain more maturity and independence in a supportive environment before heading away to college. I have heard that there is generally not much FA available for PG students (unless they are a very talented athlete who will bring a lot of talent and leadership to the school’s team(s) during that year).
