Any Prospective Yale Symphony Players?

Hi!

I am a Trombone player, and I applied to Yale last month.

Just wanted to see how many people in CC want to join the YSO like me!
I watched some of its performances on youtube, and it's pretty awesome.

What instrument do you play, and how good are you guys? :)

Hey Trombone dude, Yale is my dream school! I applied this year with no music supplement, however, because I don’t believe my playing is up to par. I play Euphonium, Tuba, and Trombone! (I wish they had a marching band, I would totally be the drum major!!)

Who told you Yale doesn’t have a marching band? My son’s suitemate is the drum major.

Yeah, Im sure I stalked the Yale Music ensembles enough to know that they have a marching band, haha.

Too bad colleges don’t recruit for music!

I’ll also put in a plug for the Concert Band and the Jazz Ensemble, both of which also need trombone players. The Concert Band is somewhat easier to get into than the YSO (in part, just because of the numbers of slots). The Jazz Ensemble has very, very good players. There are also lots of other musical groups, many of them student-run, so instrumentalists of all levels can find opportunities to play.

I play the tenor trombone, alto trombone, and ocarina! I didn’t submit a supplement, however, since I don’t have any solo pieces I thought would help…unless they’d have wanted something like “under the sea” from the little mermaid, or “The Imperial March” from Star Wars, haha…

Regardlessly, hope to see you there!

haha, I am more of a classical trombone player.

Tchaikovsky symphony 4, especially the 1st movement, is just an amazing piece for Brass. Everyone should go listen and marvel at the Brass section!

That is a good one…Have you ever heard Mahler’s No. 3? There is a lot of trombone solos in the first movement, though some don’t like it because of how solemn it is.

If you haven’t, try listening to Michael Tilson Thomas’ recording with the San Francisco Symphony, its by far my favorite recording of it.

YSO will be performing Mahler #3 on April 27 :)

These YSO musicians must be pretty darn good to play Mahler well. I heard there is this crazy good Trumpet player in the YSO right now. Im sure all the sections are fantastic.

My older son, (not the Yalie) is a trumpet player and has a cult-like obsession with Mahler…can’t get enough of it, will travel up to 100 miles to hear No.5!

Mahler 5 is probably the favorite symphony for any classical trumpet player’s list; no wonder he is so enthusiastic about it! I mean, the entire first movement is literally a Trumpet solo!

I applied! If accepted I would plan on playing the viola in the symphony. I can play the violin and cello as well but not at a very high level that would be required for the symphony.

@JennyLeann,

Did you do all state orchestra or youth symphonies in your state?
