Yale School of Music 2016

Starting a thread for this year as the only other one I could find had posts from 2009. Open to anything related to the Grafuate School of Music at Yale,

My S (music performance, U of South Carolina) plays bass trombone and will be auditioning in late February for 2016-17 MM program…welcome any thoughts, comments, tips etc

My son is in his last semester there but I have no particular tips. What did you want to know? (Composition, not performance, however.)

I’m waiting to hear back today about the Yale prescreening results for Composition (Graduate). I received an e-mail last week saying they would e-mail today with results.

Good luck to both of you!

Just received the notifications. No from Yale, Yes from Juilliard.

Well that’s pretty impressive, good luck with the interviews.

Thank you, CompMom. Doing my due diligence to prepare for the composition exam. To anyone that may have any personal experience or information regarding the exam and the interviews, it would be greatly appreciated.

@Spiritmanager, how does your son like it? What are his plans post-graduation? He’s off to audition at Rice this weekend and CIM next weekend, prior to Yale on 2/24. I think I will fly up and meet him since I’ve never seen the Yale campus…speaking of which, any good meal tips within walking distance? (Staying at the Courtyard).

I’ve never seen the Yale campus, either! As far as Yale is concerned, grad parents don’t exist. We’ll see it for the first time for graduation in May. So, sorry, no meal tips. But the Yale Parents thread on CC does have lots of advice for such things. He’s had a great experience, but he’s ready to be done with school, at least for awhile. (He did a double degree before this.) And so he’s moving on, not sure where yet, and hopes to continue supporting himself solely through composing.

I was at Yale with my daughter last spring, not for her auditions, but for a competition she was playing in. We stayed at the same hotel–there are lots of great restaurants within walking distance, StoneMagic. We loved Claire’s Corner Copia, but there are so many!

No Yalies among us, but Caseus for incredible cheesy dishes, Claires for vegetarian, Mamoun’s Falafel House for low budget but excellent middle eastern, several Indian places all excellent just around the corner, Istanbul Café for Turkish. If you like standing in line, Pepe’s Pizza and Sally’s Pizza in Wooster Square (not walkable but a quick cab ride) offer good pizza. Louis Lunch for mid-day hamburgers; don’t ask for ketchup!

bubba, I’ll PM you. I believe the exam is for placement purposes, but check to make sure. It’s good to study, but don’t stress. Placement exams don’t affect admissions, as far as I know. I think it is a good idea to call admissions so you hear this from them, and it will lower your stress levels, which will help your interview!

Thanks all for the insights and food tips, much appreciated!

P,S. - booked my flight yesterday, I’ll basically be there to carry his bags and get him to and from the airport in Hartford…figured he doesn’t need the added stress given we’re in and out over 2 days, plus I’d like to see the campus… Continue to send good vibes our way!

@StoneMagic - how did you like Rice?

Does anyone know how the process works for Harvard (Graduate Composition). I’ve called a few times and can’t really get a definitive answer from anyone whether there is pre-screening/interview/acceptance process or just a straight yes or no? Can anyone shed any light if there are prescreens/interviews? Thank you!

I think it is a straight yes or no. I’ll double check with someone who knows.

Any confirmation on this? I’m curious as well. Starting to get other offers for Phd programs but still waiting to hear from Harvard.

Sorry I missed the concert where I was going to ask due to snow! Have you considered calling Harvard? They are pretty friendly there

I have, unfortunately they play things very close to the vest.
