Any Public Health Majors out there?

So there's a bunch of Econ and Philosophy majors out there... but what about the Public Health majors! Just wondering, how many people applied for Public Health transfer this year on this forum? Feel free to post stats, concerns, etc. 20 spots for this major so it'll be interesting to see fellow applicants.

maybe they only keep 20 spots open for this major cuz not too many ppl apply to it in the first place

PH major here!

~ 3.9 GPA
IGETC completed
Will be missing 1 prereq :[

Its strange… I don’t hear of many transfers declaring PH as their major
&the major is considered to be very popular at cal.

PS where is it stated that there are only 20 seats available?

@calbearguy- I sure hope so! Less competition : )

@striver90- what prereq are you missing? Is it Bio or Calc? Yeah, i find that odd too since that major is in high demand at cal but not from CC. Which is nice, but who knows, there might be a high number of qualified applicants this cycle… And I heard from my TAP coordinator (as well as my head CC counselor) that there are 15-20 seats available.

Well according to my cc I need to fulfill 4 bio courses and i did 3.

How are ur stats?

Wait 4 sciences? are you guys in a quarter system or something? My stats are alright… I am still waiting for all my grades to be posted so it’s a bit too soon to tell.

No semester. There’s plant biology, zoology, cell molecular biology, and ecology. I won’t have time for ecology. With only 20 spots gl :T

LOL goodluck to the both of you!

Oh dude, that sucks! At my CC, Zoology+Cell Molecular Bio=Bio 1A and Plant Bio and Ecology=Bio 1B.

Okay, I went on stat finders and also checked the pdf for transfer admissions for Public Health. Apparently, for 2009, 40 applicants applied (hopefully even lower this year!)- 8 of those applicants were not eligible b/c of their low GPA (less than 3.0). That makes 32 eligible- 14 admitted, 8 enrolled. So that means a 35% acceptance rate based on statfinder. This is also confirmed on their transfer admission pdf

Hope that helps people.

wow
hopeful

lol everyone jumps on the train to Berkeley. It is not the only UC to offer it as an undergraduate major. There is also UCI which started it a few years back. I wouldn’t major in it tho. I say study something else and then get a masters in it. Unless you want a preview of what you will see in a graduate program. It is a pretty good pre-health major tho.

The curriculum doesn’t even look all that great. Very little public health classes and a lot of classes from other departments. I think it would be way more beneficial to major in something else. But that is just my opinion.

…which is why your opinions should lead you into declaring your own major

Just speaking my mind. Take it as a grain of salt. Don’t be all butt hurt about it.

even with your tendencies to jump to conclusions, I’m Not butt hurt just “speaking my mind” thanks

@ itransfer, you do realize you’re talking to ppl who already made up their mind? Suggesting we major in “something else” is a waste of our time. Plus, not everyone is going to grad school; people have different pathways. I know what I’m doing but thanks for the input (despite the lack of tact).

@ Striver90

My grades are finally posted. I feel like my stats are not that strong since I got 11 units worth of Bs. But it was in Calc and Chem so I’m not too bummed out… kinda. For Calc, I got an 89% in the end and the prof wouldn’t round up, oh well, c’est la vie. I need to try harder next time since I got burned out 3/4 of the way.

Stats:
3.79- Overall
Prereq GPA so far: 3.82
IGETC completed
Two more prereqs for the spring- Calc and Bio1B
Essays- okay, I guess 8/10. I wrote about growing up and my experience at CC.
EC- Health Intern at some place, Red Cross Club president, TAP, and other random quirks.

89% and no round up? Harsh professor…
Those are two good ECs though. Relative to your major.
&, if you applied to UCI’s PH program that GPA will surely get you in.
good luck april is still far, far away…

haha it was SO dumb too. I was pressed for time so I had to write my answer down really quick. So i put down the improper fraction down but I thought he wanted in decimals but since I was in a rushed, I read my calculator super quick and wrote down the answer in the wrong decimal place! that cost me my A. I even pointed the improper fraction to him but he was like um I can’t let you have the credit since you got it wrong. Even if he gave me half credit that would have been an A. But I’m not that bitter about it though, I was lazy at some point during the semester so I got what I deserved.

I can’t believe 3 Bs brought my grade so low though.

And yea, fingers crossed! Hope we both get in!
