If you have any questions about this school, just ask. I'm there now and I absolutely love it here.

It is a small boarding school in Middletown, Delaware.

Fun Facts about the school:
There are around 288 students in grades 9-12
The school is on 2200 acres of land
The Dead Poet's Society was filmed here
There are usually from 8-15 people in each class

So if there are any questions about the school, feel free to ask. :)

Are you a Freshman? What other schools did you apply to? How much, if any, did your grades change ie. A to B, A to C, mix of both. How much homework a night is there? Does each student have their own laptop? Are students allowed out of their dorms after evening study hall? What don't you like about St Andrews? Do you actually get to roam around on the 2200 acres. So much land, do they allowed students to go camping? Do they have wknd trips into Delaware City or D.C.? Who's SAS rival? Is there crew? Can one try out for any sport and get to play regardless of their athletic ability?

Indeed crew is the biggest sport at SAS. Their sports rivals are Delaware private schools like Tower Hill, Wilmington Friends, Tatnall, Archmere and Sanford as well as fellow boarding school Westtown and occasionally the Hill school. Each sport is a little different - for squash they have to travel to Baltimore and DC, for crew they compete against New Jersey teams, DC, and Baltimore.

From my perspective, I would change their sports program to add some newer, non-traditional offerings like Ultimate Frisbee, Pilates, Yoga, Dance, etc. The current offerings are very limited.

I would also up the arts focus. Instead of requiring a Freshman arts survey, I would rather let the kids choose an arts class.

My son, who is a tenth grader (fourth former) at St. Andrew's-Delaware tells me that hazing is a problem in his year. Apparently some guys in his year hazed and directed anti-Semitic attacks on some new boys. I think he is a little nervous about the situation since the perpetrators are still there. Does anyone know if hazing is a common occurrence at boarding schools, or if he should consider trying to transfer to a different school, or consider a day school (There are several strong day schools near our home.) Of course, I wonder at the accuracy of his information, which I think comes from student members of the school's Discipline Committee. I have been concerned about this as soon as he told us, and would appreciate any insight that member of this forum could give us.

Hey everyone, sorry for the late reply. St. Andrew's is the most welcoming and safe school I came across, which is why I came here. This kind of an incident does not happen normally. The discipline committee spent over 4 hours trying to make a decision about this, and the faculty heads and the headmaster spent many more hours after that. The headmaster here was extremely moved by this; he has spent all of the years he has been the headmaster trying to instill in us the need to be honest and kind. For most of us here, he has succeeded in doing just that. It would be a shame to let this one incident taint the views of St. Andrew's.

If you have any more questions, please, feel free to PM me. I promise I'll PM back quickly.

Oh, and to OPS,
1. Yes, I am a freshman.
2. I applied and was accepted to Taft, Andover, and St. George's.
3. My grades have only gone down a little, I was an all A's student (my final average was around a 95 last year) and for first quarter here, my overall average was 87.
4. Every night I have anywhere from 4 hours to 1/2 an hour. I normally do get all my homework completed during the 2 hour study hall we have, and only a few times have i had to work outside of that time.
5. Almost everyone here does, but it is not required. It really does help to have one though, I think.
6. Students are not allowed out of dorm after evening study hall, only because study hall goes from 8-10 pm and on dorm time is 10:30.
7. Coming from florida, i would just have to complain about hte weather, but that is not something SAS could change. I really can't complain about much here.
8. Yepp!
9. Well, not by your self, but faculty lead camping trips frequently.
10. Yepp! But, not so sure about the Delaware City one...
11. SAS's biggest rival is probably Tower Hill, sportswise.
12. Crew is the biggest sport here.
13. Yep, I tried Squash for the first time for this season for winter and tried Volleyball too... Many people play sports that they have never done before, which is really great.

I was just speaking with a friend whose daughter (sophomore girl) is at St Andrew’s School in Delaware, and it seems like there has been an epidemic of girls with emotional/stress problems/eating disorders, etc, who have had to leave or take time off from St. Andrew’s this year. Does anyone have any information/insight into this–I have a daughter who has applied.

I just replied to CatCan via PM. If anyone has anymore questions about this, please PM me and I will be sure to reply over the next couple days. Thank you!

Also, I would like to make it clear that this is NOT something to worry about when applying to St. Andrew’s. There was only a small problem with a few girls in our school, but the problem is now under control and everyone is living their happy lives here at SAS.

so this thread actually makes me smile… i talked to itsren after visiting st andrews via this thread. and right now, almost exactly a year later, i am sitting right next to itsren in our common room at st andrews. ilovelifeee st andrews has changed everything for me, and i am so happy here. please, like itsren said, don’t worry about any rumors, everything is under control (and honestly, this place couldn’t be better). if you are thinking about applying, you should.

if i went to st. andrew’s de i could not really take the school seriously i would probaly just quote dead poet society all day and stand on my desk and yell O’captain my captain. Honestly after dead poet society i could never ever really take that school seriously, dont get me wrong its a great school with amazing academics and great university matriculation im just the kind of guy who " re-do high fives when there not good enough the first time"
