Any Questions about UCSD?

SHIP= not worth it if you already have insurance

So I don’t drink, but I don’t study all the time either… basically I like to have fun without being drunk. Will there be a lot of others like me?
I got into ERC… not sure if that makes a difference :)

Yes of course, there are many people like you. Just join clubs or go to parties you are invited to but just abstain from drinking if you don’t like it. It’s actually more entertaining to go to parties and not drink because you get watch drunk people lol and remember everything that happened. Clubs often offer fun socializing activities like ice-skating night, bonfire at the beach, korean bbq night, etc that do not involve drinking.

hii again, i was wondering if you knew anything about the DOC courses at Marshall?
I’ve read different course descriptions, but I was wondering if you knew anything else about these courses? I haven’t heard much about them. Thanks again. :D

@New2UCSD: I don’t really know the specifics, but from what I’ve heard from my friends at Marshall is that it’s easy (and it seems to be the easiest writing courses out of all the six colleges) and the topics are pretty interesting (diversity. I think I even heard something about not having to write essays…but not definitely sure on that. I also know that there are midterms and finals for the class…

yeaah looking at other writing courses in other colleges, it seems pretty straightforward.
I’m hoping it doesn’t involve too much history; i just hate history -.-
but from what i’ve heard, i think i’ll be okay.

oh and along with the DOC, should I take math20B and Chem or math and physics?
iono how easy chem is and I dont want to kill myself my first quarter there. any advice?

@new2ucsd: I can’t really advise you on what classes to take unless I know what your major is and if you met some pre-reqs for some classes (like did you pass the AP Calc exam or if you got about a 650 on your SAT Math II Subject test). Just take 3-4 classes for your first quarter and you will be fine. Also, try to take a freshman seminar.

Are there any religious groups that get together (specifically Christian groups)?

freshmen seminar? whats that?
oh and i am taking AP Calc AB (somewhat sure I’ll pass), and I’ve taken AP Chemistry (4).
I have enough AP credit to take three classes per quarter for all four years; I just didn’t know which combination of classes would be easier haha.

@lee3522: Yes! There are plenty. The ones I know of are Intervarsity, LIFE (Chinese Evangelical Church), Kairos, etc. There are a lot of Korean ones too, but none are limited to only one race. For Intervarsity specifically, I would say that it is the most diverse and they have Large Group meetings each Wednesday and small groups for freshmen (divide for each college) once a week. They also have really fun frosh retreats each quarter and other activity nights. For the spring quarter, they are going to Catalina Island for Spring Break! However, they don’t have a church affilated to go to each Sunday so people like to go to other churches on Sunday like FLOOD, CEC, Urban Plunge, etc. For Kairos, they have small groups too, but they have an on campus fellowship on Sundays. CEC has Life fellowship for everyone on Friday nights and also Sunday Fellowship. You will find your place and there are plenty from you to choose. A lot of people “church hop” to see which one they want to stick with during their freshman year so you have lots of opportunities to see which one you like the most :D

@new2ucsd: Freshmen seminars are 1-unit classes that usually meet for 1 hour a week for 8 weeks, that you take on a Pass/No Pass basis and they are only open to freshmen. The classes consist of 15-20 freshmen so it is a smaller classroom setting and you get to pick from a list of classes that interest you. For example, there is beginning ukulele, Salsa, how to read tv and other classes related to various departments. Each quarter, they offer different courses.

What’s your major??? Anyways, you can either take the math 10 series or math 20 series. usually if you are science major, you take the math 20 series. If you get a 2 or 3 on the AP calc AB, then you can take Math20A. If you get higher, you can take 20B for a 4 and 20C for a score of 5. For chem, you are exempt from chem 6a because of your AP score, so you can start at chem6b. Some people even take chem 6bl (honors), but you need to be comfortable with it. Chemistry Placement exam if you want to see what class is best for you: [UCSD | Department of Chemistry&Biochemistry – Administration](<a href=“Web Login Service - Stale Request”>Web Login Service - Stale Request)

Actually, it really doesn’t matter how many AP credits you come in/transfer with because if you may not even use them. You may have to take 4 classes per quarter depending on your college requirements and your major.

I was reading through the FAQ’s for the Housing in UCSD, and it says there that Residence Hall students can’t stay there during breaks but Apartment students can. Just curious, why is that? I’d love to stay on campus (if I get residence hall) during Spring Break because the beach is right there! >.< but looks like I can’t!

oh i knew i was forgetting something… sorry, i am a human bio major at marshall, obviously. I wanted to get through my G.Es pretty early (most of my AP takes care of humanities and disc. breadth, and the math and science are part of my major). Since I am in a science major, I’ll more than likely start with the Math20_ sequence and finish that in my freshmen year. Is Chem6BL really hard? I want to try and balance my freshmen year well, and try not to be overwhelmed with everything. I probably will go with freshmen seminars; they sound pretty cool too.

How many residential halls are there at Marshall? Also is there any difference between them?
Should I go to UCSD with bioengineering major or it is better to take biomedical engineering at UCD or UCI?

@Paulinea: Because the people who live the res halls depend on the dining halls for food and have the maintenance/custodial staff clean up. The dining halls are closed and the maintenance staff don’t work during breaks. In apartments, people clean up after themselves and there are kitchens so people can make their own food during breaks.

@New2UCSD

Hold on hold on. The math 20 series is for physical science and engineering majors. Take the math 10 series.

@clarkfobes

Chem 6BL is not an honors class, it’s a lab class you take with Chem 6C.

oh the math 10 series? oh okay, for my major it says Math 11/10C. Does that mean i need to take both Math 11 and Math 10C or just one or the other?

DOC, Math 10 Series, any ideas for my last remaining slot? I need to take both the physics and chem series, so which would be better paired with my math classes?
Thanks again.

@clarkfobes
thanks. :slight_smile: wow, i expected a lot more people to get the regents scholarships…
i’m kind of scared of attending ucsd now because i’m getting a lot of people telling me that the bio department is really competitive. XP and i heard a lot of them are regents scholars as well.

@new2ucsd: look at your four year plan here: https://aventeur.ucsd.edu/public/student_four_year_plans/?currentCollege=WA</a> (even though it’s for warren college, it should give you a general sense of what your schedule should look )

@kingselite: sorry! not a chem/bio major so I’m bound to make mistakes…

@seniorsf: there are 9 res buildings: Buildings N through V. Not much difference, maybe just location…identical in the sense that there are single sex suites with co-ed floors. I would go with bioengineering at UCSD because of prestige and reputation.

@New2UCSD

What were your AP scores in Calc AB/BC, Chem, and Physics?
