When I was growing up, I was really looking forward to that real college life which includes Saturday night football tailgates, and partying...

I was accepted into UCSD with sub-standard grades/scores and on top of it, I got my computer science major in the sixth college. On top of that, I got in with money from UCSD... so I'm happy that I got in. But after I researched some more, my happiness kind of died down..

I heard UCSD is very unsocial. There's no frat row, no football team, and hardly any parties. I'm concerned because as it is now in high school, I'm drinking/partying nearly every weekend. I can deal without having sports teams... but I don't know if I can deal with the "dry" campus policy.

Will there really be no parties? Will I really get in trouble for drinking? Or are these all myths from the people that don't party. Are there really parties every weekend if I try to find them? Is it really not that bad?

I know of SDSU and that's an option and also Tijuana. But I don't want to leave campus every weekend night in order to have fun...

Dude don't worry I have heard it both ways it just depends on who you meet plus I'll be a Freshmen in Muir next year and we will party it up for sure

Haha... ya hopefully it works out for the better. I would say I'm pretty social and I can make friends easily... so I guess it'll help. But I just want to hear more opinions about it from people that go there... as in where are the parties? Are there a lot? Are there any?

I'm not expecting UCSB... but I definitely want some.

Here's how I see it hearing a little from my brother he says its pretty dead party wise unless your at the right place and at the right time. Now that Im probably joining UCSD I say lets bring the party with us for the incoming class. It doesnt take much to start parties....

dont worry about, it just depends who you know.

i worked at a summer camp all throughout high school at UCSD and the counselors would hold parties every weekend. if you want to party just try to find the party crowd.

There are parties every weekend, on and off campus. If you want to find a party on campus, get to know people in the apartments (don't count on res halls)

if you want bigger parties, you'll probably have to go off campus (san diego state is the obvious choice..). Frats and sororities also have a lot of parties. Even though there isn't a "fraternity row", there are a lot of frat houses around. you just need to get a ride/invite

Thanks Andrew. that was the answer I was kind of looking for.

So basically, there are parties every weekend if I know the right people... and UCSD's Greek system does put out parties if I want to go, and worst comes to worst, I go down to SDSU...

Doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Also while I'm here, what do you know about freshman parking and housing? I'm pretty sure housing is guaranteed right, and freshman ARE allowed to bring cars? Are the parking garages safe? I don't have a huge equipment system, but I definitely have a pretty nice stereo with a sub.

Why would someone who got in with sub-standard numbers, looking for a party school, not pick a real party school? It would be less of a hassle, more likely to actually make it through 4 years, etc.

It's not like I'm looking for a UC Santa Barbara, cause if I was, I'd go. But I want a school where I can get a good, I mean great education and still have a fun time. Academics is my first priority, don't get me wrong. But that doesn't mean I can't party. I've heard stories from friends at Stanford, and they have stuff like open door policy where if your drinking in your dorms, just keep your door open so if something was to happen like someone drank too much, they can prevent any potential injuries or deaths. And that's the next step up at Stanford... academically.

When I say sub-standard grades, I don't mean I have bad grades. I'd say I had great grades 3.8, but are they amazing grades? No. Did I underachieve in high school? Hell yeah, I should've taken more APs, but for some reason I didn't and I do regret it. all I'm saying is that, I probably shouldn't have gotten into UCSD considering the people I know that got rejected. I know I'm a well-rounded person, first team all city football, school spirit clubs, and stuff that might have thrown me over the top. But I'm just really happy to be accepted to UCSD because of its education quality.

There's partying at pretty much every college you go to. UCSD has a little less from what I've heard, but it's still definitely possible. Like everyone else has said, you just have to know the right people. All those nightmare stories of people desperately wanting to transfer out due to a boring social life were probably due to those people expecting the party to come to them too much.

I'll probably be going to UCSD unless I get into Berkeley (got rejected from UCLA btw).

Let's organize some kind of party club that organizes parties at UCSD just for the heck of it! Hopefully, it will gain momentum and maybe one day UCSD will become a kick ass party school!
