What exactly is summer session? Do you get credits like any other quarter or? Are the classes different?

^ summer session is basically summer school. Yes, you get credits, but the difference is that you learn a whole quarters worth of material (10 weeks) in 5 weeks and also, it’s more expensive. It costs about $200 per unit… so its almost 1000 dollars for one class. Usually there are less classes offered during the summer session.

summer school is a great deal for out of state students… seriously way less expensive than doing classes during the year

what is the best/ most popular sorority at UCSD? like the one thought to have the hottest girls and be the most active with the most parties ect?

^You should notttt go into recruitment with a mindset like that or you WILL be quickly disappointed. ALL of the panhellenic sororities are great. Join the sorority that you fit in with the best and that you have the best conversations with during recruitment.

Regarding summer session and for those with experience taking/retaking classes, is the “condensed” course similar to those taken during academic quarter? Would it be difficult to take 2 classes during one summer session?

I don’t know about retaking courses. Summer classes are similar but they move soooo fast. You have a midterm after 2 weeks and a final after 4/5 weeks. In the history classes you read one book a week. it moves very quickly and I remember being somewhat overwhelmed with one class last summer (going for two this summer, yikes)

hi, am i allowed to take upper division courses in my freshmen year provided i fulfill all the prerequisites? I wanted to move an upper division bio lab into my freshmen year (I didnt wanna be stuck with 3 labs in a quarter my sophomore year). I wanted to take it in the spring quarter of my freshmen year. can i do that? thanks.

This question was probably already asked, but…

How’s the food plan at UCSD?

@new2ucsd: in order to take upper division classes, most require you to be in upper division standing (need to have 90units). So if you come in with 90 units, then you could probably take those classes. You can also take upper division classes with the consent of an instructor, if they feel that you are capable of the work.

@orangeicecream: if you live in the reshalls, you get 2700 mealpoints for the entire year. You are technically supposed to use 900 meal points per quarter. There’s a “timeline” that is usually posted around the dining halls to tell you whether you are on track or not with your meal points. Basically, at the dining halls, you pay for what you get to eat so it’s not all-you-can-eat. I think the meal point system is designed so that you are supposed to use like 11 dollars a day… but I never feel that’s enough especially if you eat 3 meals a day. Lunch and dinner is usually like 5-7 dollars each…sooo yeahh

@orangeicecream

You can get cheaper lunches though if you think you’re spending too much in the day. A hamburger is $2 and a plate of spaghetti is $3. They’re decent value for what you get, especially the spaghetti. And you can always use Triton Cash if you run out. Triton Cash is just like having a debit card on your ID card.

I ended last year with hundreds of extra dining dollars, it was unreal. I bought soooooo much **** (apartment appliances, huge Costco bulk things) at Earl’s place and still couldn’t spend all my money! One of my guy friends, however, ran out during winter… it depends on how much you eat!

Well, I will have 44 quarter units by the time I enter my freshmen year (from A.P credits). If I talked to the professor and explained what I intended to do, is it probable that I’ll be able to take the class? have you seen or heard anyone doing something like this? thaanks so much for your answers.

to the UCSD officer: what is the out-of-state acceptance rate? I know that there is a very small percentage of out-of-state slots, but would you happen to have the admit rate and also a few stats on those applicants (eg. mid 50 scores)

thanks for you time!

Anyone know somebody in the marine bio program at UCSD? Heard it was great, but just wondering.

@New2UCSD

You can try talking with the professor, but the problem with trying to add a Bio lab as a first year is the space. Lab courses (especially upper div Bio) tend to fill up fast. It’s one of the main reasons why Biology has become impacted. You would most likely be on the wait-list (which will move considerably slower than lower-division classes if at all), because all the sophomores, juniors, and seniors will have priority in enrollment.

Anyways, good luck!

thanks a lot, i’ll definitely stay on top of things and ask professors and all.
if i get lucky, i just might be able to hahah

Do you guys know anything about UCSD’s Mock Trial team? I did it in high school and loved it, and I want to continue in college. Can you get on the team as a freshman?

Also, do you have to be a communication major to work for the UCSD Guardian?

Would someone tell me how much you spend a month at UCSD? I heard the rent is really expensive

I was looking at the ucsd app. spreadsheet, and was wondering, a) does UCSD even read your letters of rec? and b) do your EC’s count very much?

also, what was the essay prompt for this year?
