Any Questions about UCSD?

I’m seeking a fair amount of fun and a great education. I know I’ll probably have more fun at UCSD, but paying for it shall be a pain. But Cal Poly Pomona shall cost a lot less and I live very close to it.

@ucsandiego915: I’ve visited Cal Poly Pomona, but I have not been able to visit UCSD. I live in Pomona, and I’m really looking for a medium between big and small. Would you mind explaining to me the lifestyle in UCSD? I don’t know too much about it.

well I guess since LA is right nearby it’s not too much of a difference. Lifestyle at UCSD is mainly focused on academics but there is a great social scene if you are willing to make some effort to find it. Campus is very laid back in general, great location (RIGHT next to the beach).

Thanks for the help! I’ll definitely consider visiting UCSD soon.

@clarkfobes – I am not sure myself on how you rate Cal poly Pomona with UCSD. US News puts them in differant categories. UCSD is more research oriented univ that offers Phd. Whereas CAl poly is more a learning fundamentals type university where Masters is the highest degreee offered. Cal Poly graduates are also in high demand because the industry perceives them as " More ready to work" than UC graduates.

Having said all the above I wish there was a way to directly and objectively rank and Rate UCs, Cal Poly, and Cal state university in a single report.

If I were to select between the two systems, I myself would have a tough time making a decision ( cost, location, employment prospects, research opportunities etc. etc all come into play to make a decision, and there is no right or wrong). The only thing to note from what I hear ( and it worries me) is that the level of competition among students for grade is extremely high in UCs when compared to CAL systems. An environment like this is lileky to create additional stress and perhaps “shortcuts and unethical practices” are probably more prevalent in the UCs because of the stress to maintain your grades. Again it depends on the individual on how he handles the competitive environment.

@greenfield: I’m just reporting the rankings that I found, but yeah… they aren’t ranked in the same categories I guess.

“The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) ranks 17th for its programs in electrical engineering and communications, and 17th in computer engineering, a program offered in both ECE and CSE” [UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering](http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/grad/facts.shtml)

"“Cal Poly Pomona is 13th overall in the nation for top Electrical Engineering undergraduate programs, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2006 College Rankings: Universities-Master’s category. Of the top 13 schools, only six are public schools, which makes Cal Poly Pomona the 6th best public school for Electrical Engineering in the U.S.” [College & University Rankings](http://www.csupomona.edu/~engineering/prospective/facts.htm)

Are there a lot of undergraduate research opportunities for physics w/astrophysics emphasis majors and/or earth science majors?

Where to work in San Diego though?for engineering?

Are regent scholars also guaranteed to get into all campus housing since housing is automatically guaranteed for all four years?

Physalis:

They used to be guaranteed 4 years housing and hopefully still are but regardless, keep in mind that a lot of students are ready to, and would rather move off campus after the first couple of years so they can have a bigger place, have their own decent kitchen, have less housing expense, etc. There are lots of apartments and condo rentals located just off campus in the UTC (University Town Center) area around Nobel and Regents roads. There are free UCSD shuttles that go between this area and campus.

For tomorrow’s Admit Day, do we just show up whenever the first major-specific session is? Because it starts around 8 or 9 I think but the paper that came in the mail for Engineering has the session for my major starting at 11 or something. What time should I go?

@danamarin: Most likely. I know that most majors have many research opportunities and usually your undergraduate adviser for your major will send out many emails during the school year about that.

@jimi7: Can you restate your question? I’m not sure I understand it.

@Physalis: Most likely. All Campus Housing is in warren this year and next.

@spacedog: I think you should come at 9 to check out the school campus in general and maybe even earlier to beat the traffic and then go to your session at 11.

I got admitted into Warren as undeclared. How difficult would it be to apply to a non-impacted engineering major? Is it treated the same as with all other non-impacted majors… just switch with a click of a button?

sorry,
i was asking for any opportunity to have work in engineering field in any companies near UCSD, because i thought it will be easier.
But I also heard of the team internship Jacob school is conducting, do everyone get a chance?

Hey
i’ve been admitted to the masters program in biomed at duke, umich and ucsd(Bioengg). I’d like to know how these schools rate against each other. Also I hear ucsd has some funding problems because of the recession. Is that true?

@khoi92: Yes, it should be that simple if it is a non impacted major.

@jimi7: [UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering](http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/faculty/undergrad_research.shtml)
You can get research opportunities/internships through Port Triton, but you just have to apply and compete against other applicants for the job.

Yes, the entire UC system is going through a budget crisis and they have raised the tuition fee up 32%.

Hey to anyone that can answer, I sent a signed letter a few months ago about changing something I put on my Senior yr schedule on my application, is there any way we’re supposed to know if they got the letter and processed the change?

@sush - UCSD has been affected by the budget crisis much less than I initially thought we would… just FYI. It’s not like our buildings are crumbling and there are no professors to teach. Things run almost exactly the same as they normally would, people are just paying more tuition for it.

@clarkfobes - I checked out the rankings as well, but arent the rankings for grad schools slightly different? I believe ucsd figures above duke there…

@ucsandiego915- Is the budget crisis affecting their research quality or is ucsd still a good place to study?

To both- With regards the quality of studies, student networks, scope for research and job opportunities, which would be better? Duke or ucsd? And should I consider the umich program? And the program is biomed at Duke and bioengineering at ucsd. Does that make a difference?

I also have another question… I’m really confused btwn duke and ucsd… and my deadline to accept is apr 15 for both… would it be wrong for me to accept both and then reject one later? Would there be any legal tangles or would i be blacklisted?? I’m not getting aid from either of them…
