Any questions for me??

I am a Princeton undergrad wrapping up my freshman year. I always wished that I had someone to ask questions to when I was looking at colleges. I am willing to answer any questions that you might have about me personally, or about life at Princeton. :) Please don't be afraid to ask. This will be fun!

What is your major and what was your SAT??

Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures. LOVE IT.
My SAT superscore was 2300

Did you take the ACT? If so, what score did you receive? Also, how is the campus/professors/social life/etc.? Im so jealous because Princeton is my dream school!

How did grade deflation affect you and your major?

What do you do exactly in Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures?
I am currently in AP Spanish Lit…and I don’t know what else there is to do. Read more complex literature? Learn rhetorical skills?

Thanks in advance!

@Chris1995- I got a 32 on the ACT. The campus is absolutely gorgeous, as you probably already know  The professors are great as well, it is such an honor to get to interact with them. For the most part there are smaller scale classes but there are also large lectures. I’ve had a fair amount of student/teacher interaction which is nice. As for social life, I’ve never been a partier, so I don’t really go to those. But I have a close group of friends and we go out into the city often which is fun. I am very busy the majority of the time, as are the rest of my friends. My family lives in California which is hard though. One of my few but main complaints about Princeton is some of the people. As I said, I came from California which is wayyy more laid back, and not as preppy. Some of the people (not all) think that because they are rich they are superior. Also people are cocky about their academic accomplishments, etc. You get the point. Its really annoying, but I’ve gotten used to it. I’m sure you would find that just about anywhere though. (Mostly the Ivies) Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely a lot of amazing people too. :)

@ivymania- I don’t know too much about the whole grade deflation issue. It was present, but I got mostly Bs with the occasional A. I think I got the grades I deserved for the most part. But like I said, I haven’t really looked that much into the issue and haven’t noticed it too much particularly. Yes, we dive into some complex pieces of literature and get a really good grasp of the language. There is a big emphasis on learning the aspects of their cultures.

Sounds like everything it’s made out to be! Hahaha. And you got the score I’m shooting for. I would love to go there for their biology program, but getting accepted seems like such a challenge! Do you know how much the admissions dept. bases their picks on EC’s? I have heard that they are really important, but having trouble finding something that would really stand out. Anyways, thanks for answering my question! If my dream comes true I’ll be there in 2 years :stuck_out_tongue: ahaha

I don’t know if they have any specific thing they are looking for…I haven’t really had the opportunity to talk about that with any admissions officers. The thing that I have in common with a lot of the students I’ve met is that we were able to have unique experiences in our areas of interest. I am very intrigued by Spanish and politics. One summer I was able to be an intern for a diplomat. I also intensely pursued the language and had centered ECs.

How competitive have things been in your experience? I really hope to go to Princeton, but one of my concerns is that I’ve heard that the academic experience is cutthroat.

Hi! It is unlikely that I’ll ever be able to visit Princeton and experience it for myself, but I was wondering if you would look at my “profile” and tell me if I would fit in well there. I absolutely love Princeton’s academic programs from reading about them online, and if I were so fortunate to be accepted, it would be my dream to dance in the Princeton University Ballet. It’s just so hard to tell if you’re a good fit for a school! haha :)

@latinisfun- Lol, there are definitely those people that take things way too seriously. It is hard to explain just exactly how they act…I’m at a loss for words :stuck_out_tongue: But you just have to recognize that some people are just always going to be like that. It’s fun to surprise them by being incredibly nice back. But ya, I just shake it off because there isn’t really much you can do about them. I’ve never had an experience where someone deliberately tries to sabotage me. Just people being really competitive.

@derivative22- I am unworthy, I am unworthy! I would be so incredibly shocked if you didn’t get in to be honest. You have an incredibly impressive profile AND you are a fabulous dancer  “May the odds be forever in your favor”

Thank you so much for looking at my stuff and for your encouragement! :)

Do you have any tips for getting to know people and making friends? What activities do you do on campus? Are you considering joining an eating club?

I think the best way to make friends is just be friendly to everyone in your classes and in your dorm. If you have a good conversation with somebody, ask them if they would like to go to lunch with you sometime. I did this a lot and made some great friends this way. The majority of the time people are just waiting for you to ask first! Also, go to sporting events. I haven’t really gotten involved in any clubs this year. I just wanted to use this year to establish some friendships and get accustomed to the college lifestyle. I’m seriously considering joining an eating club but haven’t completely made up my mind. Eating clubs are a big deal here.

Do you happen to know anyone who got in soley on their admission essays? (I’m not sure how you would know that, but in case you had a friend or something.) I feel like I could do well with those even though my credentials (as of now) are pretty much nothing.

Not anyone that I know. All my friends had high GPAs and solid ECs. I’m sure Princeton wants more than some who can write a good essay.

Right, obviously. Thanks for responding though… These are the few times in my life where I wish I hadn’t been homeschooled so I’d have the chance to visibly prove that I have ambitions.

Well there are always ways.

I got a letter from another top school (not Princeton) that specifically referenced my essay. However, like everyone else at Princeton, I didn’t lack for high-level EC’s. But you can take heart that adcoms are reading–really reading–your essays, and that they can be impressed by them.
