Any runners on the UA campus?

My D is Bama bound this fall! She’s a cross country runner and has developed a love for the sport. Sadly, I didn’t see any mention of cross country at UA, but I wonder if there are any running clubs or perhaps an active running community? Of course she can run alone, but she likes the group camaraderie.
And here’s another one out of left field - can anyone recommend vegetarian friendly restaurants in the area? The dining hall we visited had a salad bar and other options, but I’m wondering if some places on campus are more veggie-centric than others.
Forgive the questions so specific to my kid, but I know the answers can be found on CC!

I believe that all the dining halls feature a vegetarian meal of the day. I don’t know if they have “veggie burgers” at the burger stations or not. Anyone know?

I will look for more info in a bit…got an errand to run.

I’ll also look up running at the rec center.

Ooh, good idea - the rec center was incredible. I’ll check…

My two Ds (one current student and incoming freshman) love the hummus and veggie pitas at the Pita Pit, 1207 University Blvd. Lots of choices for vegetarians. (www.pitapitusa.com)

I know that there is an indoor track above one of the gyms in the Rec Center.

I’m still looking to find jogging/running groups/clubs…but I found this…

Fun!!

I know a lot of runners, including one who participates in cross country events for UA IIRC. Due to scheduling conflicts, many of them run alone, but lately I have seen a lot of people running in pairs.

At Lakeside, Boca Burgers are offered and are cooked at the vegetarian station. There are many vegetarians at UA, just apparently not the percentage I’m used to seeing. Apart form salads and pasta, I’d see if the Asian restaurants have good vegetarian food. Otherwise, it might be most convenient to cook her own food.

Good info, all. Thanks!

Timeflew, one of the regular moms who posts on the Alabama forum (momof3boyz) has a son who runs on the men’s cross country team (he’s also a NM scholar and in CBH).

Perhaps if you send her a PM, she can give you some details on what running clubs are available.

Great! I don’t know how I missed cross country listings on the Athletics site. I’ll make some contacts.
As always, CC community comes through!

XC is alive and well at UA!!

My son was a walk-on athlete for Men’s XC and Track. He was not recruited for his athletic talents. UA’s Honors College recruited him for his academic talents.

You can find information about Girl’s XC on Rolltide.com. I can’t speak for the girls program however, there are lots of guys on the Men’s XC roster that were also walk-on’s. My son has had a wonderful experience at UA for two years. When his class obligations conflict with practice times, my son runs on his own or with a teammate.

I would strongly recommend your daughter contacting the coach by phone or e-mail. She should be prepared to provide her official stats. To check if your D’s personal record times are comprable to other UA runners, seach the Biographical info for each of the girls on the roster. If her times are good enough that she might run with the team, you will need to register with the NCAA Clearing House. here’s the link: ( Redirecting )

My son contacted the coach only a few weeks before I dragged him down to UA for a visit (he never thought he would choose UA). The coach agreed to meet my son and I. We asked if the coach could make arrangements for my son to stay overnight in a dorm with one of the runners. I stayed at a hotel and met my son in the morning for the official Campus Tour. Since my son initiated the visit, this was NOT considered an “official visit”.
