Hi CC,
I had an unusual turn of events where I was committed to a school that provided about $40000 worth of merit scholarship but got off of the waitlist for an Ivy and decided to take it. At the time I was committed to the other school, I didn’t bother to seek outside scholarships since my tuition was largely paid for, but now I’m scrambling to find scholarships.
ANYONE know of any scholarships that are still available? Or any good sites to go to? Is it too late? I’d really appreciate the help. Thanks!
How much are you looking for? Did you already rescind your merit scholarship school?
Contact the merit scholarship school and see if you can get your scholarship back.
If the Ivy is not affordable without scholarships, then I would not attend.
Our local scholarships have all been awarded by now, they were due back in March but they are for small amounts anyway.
How much do you need? If you are full pay to an Ivy, your family income is in the $300,000 a year range.
Or did you not apply for financial aid?
At this point, it’s a little late to find scholarships for bills that you likely will receive within the next month.
So…how much do you need? When you made the decision to take the wait list offer, did you speak to your parents about the net cost?
If the Ivy is unaffordable, I’d try contacting your first school to see if you can be reinstated there.
Yikes, this makes me sad.
Did your parents agree that they could pay for the Ivy? How much are you looking for? I assume you already have a job for this summer?
YES, most of the money has probably been distributed.
There are probably organizations or private foundations in your community which will still accept an application for aid at this point in the cycle. Your HS guidance counselor or principal will know about them.
BUT- most of them focus on “last dollar” type scholarships- i.e. a kid who got need based aid from college, plus a Pell, maybe a state grant if your state offers them, but needs some modest help with the family contribution or with expenses (a winter coat, new eyeglasses, transportation to campus in August). You may not need to fill out a detailed financial aid application, but will probably need a letter from a social worker or similar stating that your family has significant financial need and that you’ve been diligent applying for institutional aid. It could be $250; it could be $2500 but organizations like this are not likely to come up with 10K and up. And the money is targeted to kids who would not be able to go to college at all without the extra money.
Have you reviewed the costs and timing of the bills with your parents?
Where did you think you’d find 40K in May???
Usually you can’t fund a degree with outside scholarships… I hope you stick with the school that has given you money
Going to the ivy is a mistake, in my opinion, if it’s going to mean a last minute scramble for money. Not worth it.
