axess says that my dorm (escondido village) will be ready by September 12th. Assuming that I move in on this day -- what am I supposed to do until classes start on September 21st?

I'm just wondering what they expect grad students to do for a full week. 2 days will be devoted to orientation stuff, but that still leaves 5 other days that I'll be really bored.

Was wondering if I should move in a little bit later, such as the day before orientation (which are on Sept17-18th)

You could become acquainted with your surroundings or try to meet fellow grad students or drop by some labs you’re interested in or spend a few days in San Francisco or something. Try to set up your first rotation (if you do those) to start then. It’s up to you. Are you looking for suggestions or what?

you guys all living on campus??
i live off campus so i won’t even be there until the day before the orientation. i am moving all my stuff to palo alto this labor day weekend tho. man my boss gave me so much work to finish before i go so i probably have to do a lot of OT. can’t believe i am going back to school in less than a month!!

I’ll also be moving in on the 12th. I’m planning on starting with my first rotation on the Monday after that, and I’ll be meeting with faculty to choose my classes at some point during that week.

apparently the New Graduate Student Orientation already planned a lot of stuff for those of you who are moving in on the 12th. i just got the email with the schedule. guys go check it out

yea, im putting in my 2 weeks as well and staying at Munger. very excited and i believe the nearest trader joes is in Menlo Park which is close enough to bike to?? i don’t think it’s necessary to have a car, although it is a luxury i believe. i looked into the annual pass which cost about 700… averages about 70-80 bucks a month for one academic year. can i hitch a ride with you guys so i can buy groceries?? JK… =)

what are you guys majoring in?? im in Env Eng and there seems to be a lot to do that week in between move in date and beginning of school. goood luck everyone and I hope to see you guys in the coming weeks.

well you don’t have to get an A permit right? you can always get the C permit right? it’s $605 vs $235. ‘A’ permit offers greater availability and closer to building but i guess C permit isn’t so bad. since all of our classes should be pretty close to engineering buildings anyways. and there are lots L-21, L-25, and S-2 right next to them.

I too will be driving to school even tho i live at a bikeable distance of 2.5 miles. i am just too lazy

hmm well i think i read somewhere that on-campus residents arent allowed to get a C permit? i have no idea. i honestly dont even know what A and C permits are!

ugh guys! what do i do??! im still deciding on whether to drive up to school and buy a on campus housing ~600$ permit, or to just get a rental car and move up.

does anyone know details about how i could rent a van to move my stuff from socal to stanford, and then drop off the rental car at a nearby location? (like assuming i use Enterprise or something like that?)

i am doing the exactly the same thing which is renting a car for a one way rental from so cal and dropping it off at SFO. i was also debating about using my own car but the parking permits are ridiculously expensive, it’s not worth it in my opinion.

I believe on campus residents aren’t allowed to purchase either A or C permits. I think you’re required to get the RES permit, which is the same price as the C.

if you can get a C permit then it’s $235 per school year… it isn’t too bad. that’s like $24 a month! not bad at all. here at ucd we pay $180 per quarter…

just get a uhaul or penske truck for a one-way move. that’s exactly what i am gonna do this weekend

actually…would they know if i ended up buying a C permit but was also a resident? im guessing they attempt to cross-match applicants like that to make sure no residents are attempting to buy the C permit over the RES (residents) permit…

oh sorry i keep forgetting you will be living on campus. i just looked at the website and it said you can’t get A nor C, so i guess you can only get RES but that would only allow you to park at your dorms but not for classes. correct me if i am wrong
