Any still-open dorms to avoid?

Hi everyone, I hope to attend IU in the fall as a freshman in the Jacobs School of Music. I’ve been following the mold problems because I have substantial mold allergies, and I need to be in a dorm where there aren’t any mold issues. My question is, we’ve seen three dorms closed due to the mold issues—are there any dorms still open that have had any mold issues, and so I should try to avoid with my housing preferences? I’m interested in a few of the LLC’s/themed dorms; would applying for these help me get into a safer dorm?

I would call and talk to RPS. I think you would want to go into one of the newly renovated dorms as they will have the most modern HVAC systems which should take care of any issues.

I would try to avoid Wright as is it is very old, has no A/C, and I’m guessing lower air quality than most other dorms. LLCs would be a good idea if you are interested since you know exactly which dorm the LLC is in.

Wells Quad had a gut overhaul in 2017, Read, Spruce, and Forest are your best options. If you have a mold alllergy, you will need to have a signed medical verification form signed by your doctor. You can locate and download the form on the IU website. Simply put on the form to avoid buildings with a history of mold.

Thank you all for the help! I will plan to submit Southeast neighborhood as my preference, possibly in the arts dorm.

Mold has been found this year in rooms throughout all of McNutt, Foster and Teter Quads. Those 14 named residential buildings/wings within those quads will be offline for “upgrades” allegedly to be accomplished in one academic year. Unprecedented and ambitious undertaking as compared to renovations done in past years, but that is the announced “goal” they hope for. Mold has also been found in buildings of Ashton and Wright. Best advice is to READ the language of the housing contract thoroughly. THere is a clause that you agree to by signing it, that says they can change your assignment at will and doing so does not constitute a breach of contract on their part. When you fill out the housing application you are asked to list your preferences. They are preferences not guarantees. At the start of this year there were upset parents on social media stating their student had applied early and selected highest price tier, etc and got placed in Wright or a lower tier location. IU does not guarantee placement in a specific location. So just be realistic. With the ongoing mold crisis in the spotlight, everyone wants a mold free clean dorm and while there are renovated or newer buildings, IU announced it plans to welcome another very large class of 8000 students (this year’s was historic size) so not everyone is likely going to fit into the newer or most renovated buildings. Some people end up getting exactly what they hoped for in terms of price, location and roomie, others do not. Just be sure you understand what the contracts really say that you are signing, not what you hope or assume they should be providing.
