Choosing a Dorm at IU

I’m a little stuck on choosing a dorm at IU. The whole selection process seems kind of intimidating- everyone on the IU Schools app seems to already know exactly where they want to live, while I"m feeling a little “uneducated,” if you will.

So my question, for those of you more experienced in residential life- I’m a Kelley DA looking to be involved in student government and uninterested in Greek Life. I prefer to stay close to my classes, in an area that is more academics oriented without being an “academic floor” or the LLC. I really just want to figure out what I’m doing by the time housing applications roll out. Any suggestions?

It honestly doesn’t matter that much where you live. Teter, Wright and McNutt are probably your best options location-wise, but Wright has no air conditioning. Wright and Teter are central, and McNutt is northwest. Also, why don’t you want to live in the LLC? Just curious.

@iubaccounting The idea of having a full business-oriented schedule does not interest me. Of course, this is what I’ve gathered from the LLC website, so I could have a totally wrong idea of what being part of the LLC entails. I’m really looking forward to trying everything I possibly can in other fields, even though I know I want to ultimately graduate with a business management degree.

You do have to go to some business events for the LLC, but it’s only about 5 per semester and most of them aren’t more than an hour long. You also have to take an extra 1 credit class each semester, but the classes require no effort and are free A’s. You’re right that it does add business events to your schedule, but you really aren’t going to spend that much extra time doing business stuff if you live in the LLC.

The main draw of the LLC is that it lets you meet a lot of people that you instantly have something in common with since everyone is a Kelley major. But if you don’t have any problems making friends and want to meet different people, I’d agree that not living in the LLC makes sense for you.

You don’t choose a dorm, rather, a ‘neighborhood’’… There are good choices depending on budget. You can kind of select specific dorm if you apply to an LLC.

For Kelley, there are some good choices nearby. DD2 has lived in Forest and Collins, and Cedar during NSO, and I have overnighted at Wilkie during NSO.

Worry more about food choices, from my experience Forest is hands down the winner, and if you’re into it, Collins.

Things look better after first year, since choosing a specific place is much more straightforward.

Read has a traditional cafeteria–open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner–and sandwich place and burrito place open late that was pretty good.

Wright has a fast food cafeteria with some “ethnic food” that is adequate and open most of the day.

Lots of good choices; There’s one venue (may be Wright as mentioned) that rotates ethnic inspired foods weekly, and those are pretty good too. I tried the regular Wright food during NSO in July and it was decent, nothing spectacular tho. Nice venue, about as college-y as it gets. Tried Cedar breakfast, pretty good.

The one place that really made me smile was the Tudor Room at the IMU. Not part of RPS food unfortunately but if your parents like a nice well cooked buffet and great ambiance when they visit you can’t beat it (no need to introduce your parents to the awesome restaurant scene quite yet :)). We had a couple of scholarship foods there and they were nice.
