Any tips for a new fencer?

I wanna try fencing FA as a sophmore, but I have never fenced before. I am in pretty good physical shape, and play tennis on my school's team. Can someone give me any advice/tips on how to win matches and just become a better overall fencer?

Thanks :D

Also, are there any drills I can do on my own, w/o equipment?

Woos fencing that’s an intriguing sport. But no tips sorry. I know little to nothing on it :(. I do know the sport takes patients.

Fencing always seemed pretty cool. While I have no advice: I have 2 questions since we dont have it at our school.

Is it considered a nerd sport at your school? (I play golf so I’m not way discouraging you even if it is.)

What season is it played in?

Dueling people with metal swords is nerdy??? But in all seriousness, at my school fencing attracts a lot of different people; a bunch are nerds, but others are pretty serious athletes

It’s a winter sport

Make sure you wear a mask…:)

Make sure when the clock is paused at one second and you’re the selected winner by default that when fencing begins they actually start the clock. You don’t want to be cheated out of a silver medal.

Work a LOT on the positions and different moves! My dad did fencing in college and he said that he worked hours on the basics, so that he would be way better when actually fencing :).

Practice footwork, especially lunges.

And, er, winning matches takes strategy, form, and speed. I lack the latter.

Thanks for all the info guys :D

Make sure you don’t suck lol
