Any tips for an international student on how to make friends?

I'm an international student from Singapore studying in the States (San Francisco) and it has been TOUGH getting to know people. Especially as a person who has been introverted pretty much her entire life. First off, I didn't make the deadline for campus housing so I've had to rent a room in a place off campus. There are currently 2 other housemates, both guys, staying in the house and one more who's moving into the basement next week. However they never seem to want to mingle and most of the time the only person who will talk to me is my landlady (lol). Don't get me wrong, I love talking to her; she's one the nicest, cutest little old ladies I've ever met. But it would be nice to interact with a few people my age now and then - to get the full American college experience. Secondly, the college I go to (SFSU) is a commuter college so most kids live off campus. I don't know what to do! I move onto campus in Spring '15 though, and I will be assigned a roommate... so I'm hoping this is just a short term problem :(

As you know, Americans like their sports! Join an intramural team – students often go out for drinks after games, it’s a great opportunity to get to know people. I know people in big school whose life became a lot more fun after joining ultimate frisbe!

Talk to other people and introduce yourself randomly to strangers - whether in the lunch line, during some of your classes, or try and join clubs and teams. I know it can be rough, it is even for us regular college freshman but you just gotta get yourself out there. I find that the international students that have introduced themselves to other people here have gotten a warm reception because people want to get to know them and hear about this completely new lifestyle

I agree with shawn. Join a club or two. If you are waiting for a class to start, start talking to the other students about assignments or the class, in general.

Don’t shy away when people talk to you, but show them you are interested(or feign…)in what they are talking about.
