Any tips or advice for an incoming transfer student?

Hi,

I was accepted to UCLA for Fall 2014 from community college and I can't wait to move in to my dorm and start school! But as a new student, I'd like to know what you guys would recommend for me to make the most out of my experience here at UCLA. What restaurants to try out at least once in UCLA and in Westwood, how to excel in my classes(I'm a philosophy major, by the way), how to make the most of the social experience at this school, and so on.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on getting accepted! That is no small feat. I can’t believe how late UCLA starts this year, school has been in session at USC and many other colleges for a couple weeks now. Anyway, some of the must try places in Westwood include Fat Sal’s and Diddy Riese. I’m a big fan of Gushi and Chick-fil-A as well. I would suggest you take it easy with classes for fall quarter so you can adjust to the new environment, because the transition is often the toughest aspect for incoming transfers and freshmen since the quarter system goes by quickly. The first few weeks of fall quarter is probably the best time to meet people and make new friends, especially on your floor. Don’t be afraid to go up to someone and start a conversation, people here overall are open and friendly. Attend Enormous Activities Fair and check out some of the clubs on campus, and take advantage of the resources for transfers. Form study groups and attend office hours if you need help. Not sure if you would be into Greek life but that is also an option. I found intramural sports to be super fun. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice! And UCLA’s taking forever to start, lol.

I’ll definitely try Diddy Riese and Fat Sal’s, as well as attend Enormous Activities Fair. It sounds like fun. Thanks again!
