Any Tips or Suggestions?

I'm an 8th grader and I know that it may be early but I want to see how I am on my way to getting into an Ivy League. I'm pretty good at math and science (best grades in them). I did many competitions as well. I can get a full score on the math part of the SAT but I lag in the other subjects. My hobbies include tennis, kung-fu(black belt) and art. I won competitions in the latter.

Find a few activities you love and pursue them extensively. Take rigorous courses and get A’s. Study for and take both the SAT and ACT.

And please, please, stay off College Confidential.

Sorry to tell you this, but many of these accomplishments and activities will not be worth putting on college applications. But yes, you seem very active and science-oriented; I’d say you’ll be very competitive at top colleges in four years.

Edit: Why should he stay off CC? This seems like a wonderful site full of varied and passionate individuals striving toward greater successes and accomplishments. Why would anyone want to shy away from such a place?

I don’t think he would intend on putting these accomplishments on his application when the times comes. We all know that high school is what matters and what you do in high school. Yet what he’s offered is a little sampling into A.) what he’s good at and B.) what he’s passionate about.

My suggestion is that you should indeed do 2 or maybe 3 max activities (ECs) that you’re passionate. They should hopefully be in the area that you’re interested in pursuing for college and a career, and also allow you the opportunity to receive leadership positions in them. Academically, focus on your SATs and ACTs; find which one suits you best. Also take rigorous courses, but choose wisely as it’s NOT necessary to take 6 AP classes. Find the AP classes that will help you get where you want to go - in addition to the generic AP classes of course (ex. AP English Lang and AP US History). Don’t be worried about a couple A-'s or B+'s. It’s more important to take the rigor! I myself have gotten 5 A-'s and 2 B+'s, my GPA is still a respectable 3.9 and I hope to compete for high level colleges next year!

Fantastic to see someone so young getting advice from those who’ve been exposed to the college admission process. Best of luck and I hope you get into the colleges you are hoping for!
