How useful do you think studying abroad as an engineering major is when applying to a job or to graduate school? Is the experience worth the cost?

I'm a Mechanical Engineering major with interest in Biomedical Engineering as well. If I do study abroad, I'm interested in doing so in Hong Kong, China; Melbourne, Australia; Shanghai, China; Germany; Denmark.

What about in-US exchange student programs? Would this be a better option since it’s lower cost?

US students in high school who want the study abroad experience majoring in engineering can apply to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which costs about $22,000 to $25,000 per year for international students. Yes, the entire degree would be “study abroad”. No idea on the selectivity of the school, although it seems to have a good reputation internationally and HKIE accreditation (with mutual recognition with ABET and other accrediting organizations).

It would not be surprising if there were other non-US schools with engineering that have good reputations, appropriate engineering accreditation, and reasonable costs.

I know someone who’s an engineer for Boeing that did an internship in South Korea with Samsung and really enjoyed it. Didn’t even need to know the language either.

$22,000-$25,000 for an entire year, while still certainly cheaper than many private colleges in the US is still quite a lot for me (At my current school, tuition, and room and board is only $22k or so excluding the loans and grants I have. A whole year investment is a bit much so I’m more interested in exchange student or study abroad opportunities.
