Hi, I’m thinking about majoring in engineering. I’m still in high school so I have no idea where I’m going to college.
I heard that it is problematic for engineers to study abroad. Is it possible to study a full year abroad in a Middle Eastern country and maybe take some engineering classes there or get some of my non-engineering credits out of the way over there, or would I have to settle for a semester?
Thanks!
It’s possible (off the top of my head, my university participates in this [Global Engineering Education Exchange](http://www.iie.org/Programs/GlobalE3) program). Some colleges are more supportive than others, and you should consider that when you’re choosing where to apply.
I didn’t, but it is possible. Most of the people I know of that studied abroad had to stay an extra semester though.
Try looking at places with a project based cirriculum. WPI, which is mostly an engineering school, requires all students to do a project their junior year that is included in the grad requirements, and over half of the students do these projects abroad. Northeastern also has students do a co-op, though theirs is a five year program. I’m not sure about a full year, but there are schools where you don’t have to spend an extra year in college in order to study abroad.
