This is my first year applying for internships, and I noticed that nearly all the technical/engineering positions in my area (DC metro) are for IT/SE/CompS. I am thinking about picking up a CompS minor to accompany my ME major. I think it might take an extra year, I haven't looked too deep into it yet. Would a CS minor be enough to open up more job opportunities for me?

If you pick your minor courses carefully, they can help you with the concepts needed in the computer industry or when doing something applying computers to the subject of your major. Though whether it will help getting a job in the first place is a different story.

Suggested courses (beyond the intro courses and prerequisites):

General software development: software engineering, operating systems, computer networks, intro theory; consider adding databases, user interfaces, and/or security if you have schedule space (though if you do that you may be close to a major)

Software development for specific applications: the general software development courses plus any courses that appear particularly helpful to the applications

IT: operating systems, computer networks, databases, security
