She would be very welcome at UNC. This was the point of my original post, it's beeen parents who have the problem and are creating the controversy here, not any students. I assure you she would love UNC and would be very welcome there.

You have stated this in several different threads while trying to illustrate what you believe to be a small difference between in-state and OOS acceptance standards:

The average SAT in 2005 for residents is 1288, while the average for non-residents is 1356."

If you remember statistics class, you must note that the sample for OOS students is significantly smaller (less than 1/5 the in-state sample) so it takes far fewer lower scores to bring the "average" down. In doing a quick scan of the football, basketball (mens only) lacrosse, baseball and one other sport I found 112 OOS athletes- there are many more but if an incoming freshman class has 55 OOS athletes (a low number) in all sports, that's ten percent of the overall admiited OOS students . I would venture to say that for the most part and I am careful not to lump all athletes into this, but for the most part, they will have a lower test score than the regular pool. Although the pure numbers may be 1288 and 1356, I would venture to say that if scores were normalized the dicrepancy would be higher.

This does not say that there are not a lot of very bright in-state kids at UNC, in fact I would guess that in raw numbers they are probably in greater overall number and in worst case close to 1 to 1 with their OOS peers. The main difference is that there are also quite a few (as there should be for a home state school) in-staters who were offered admission with a much lower bar or standard. That's all ANYONE has been trying to say. No one has EVER said OOS kids are better, all that has been said is that because of numbers, the admission pool is more highly selective and the standards are higher for OOS kids overall. Nothing more, nothing less. The kids don't even realize who is OOS or in-state. Why don't we all drop this so kids and parents don't look with disfavor on the school we all love.
