Any wharton undergrads here?

any wharton undergrads here who would talk to me to field some questions. right now wharton is my # 1 and im trying to get some personal student reaction on a couple of things thanks

hey. i'm also interested in wharton. What do u think the Sat range is around?

sure fire away...

well jwb, to be competitive for wharton you really need to have at least a 2100...although there are many people that I know with lower scores (myself included I had a 1300). I can't give you a range but I know people with pretty much 1300-1600. Most having somewhere in the 1400-1550 range.

hey bern do u have an aim sn that i could talk to instead

same as my CC name

dope, then go online hah

BERN are u currently in wharton? If so, what do u think can make an applicant really stand out? What made you stand out?

I think Wharton does a great job in creating diversity in its students. The highest scores will make you competitive, but most likely won't gurantee an acceptance. You'll rarely see hardcore nerds in Wharton, though there are a few, but rather students who have strong personalities and have unique interests. I would infer that ECs and the personal statement play a huge role in admissions.

hahaha sorry i can't log-on I'm at work right now and my office comp doesnt have aim...as you can tell I'm occasionally taking little breaks from PNL models, and balance sheet! ;)

Yeah I'm currently a student. I just finished freshman year. well wharton loves to see leadership. They don't care if you've never had business experience or business ECs. They just love to see ambitious leaders. Personally I can't name any real thing that made me stand out (they all seems pretty standard to me) but some interesting things on my app were I was captain of a nationally ranked club soccer team, president of NHS, president of the French Honor Society, i'm trilingual, I have an interesting cultural background (born and raised in mexico by a swiss father and a mexican mother, lived in switzerland a few years, and then in the states), I had an internship at UBS, and I helped organize Mexican President Fox's visit to Phoenix...

practically everyone i've met at wharton has been a leader in their community...they have all been ambitious leaders who took initiative and did something. Personally the best recommendation I can give you is market yourself to the school in a way that is unique. Do this in your essays...the adcom that admitted me told me this year that my why penn essay put me over the top. really show them how much you love penn...

i completely agree penn15...btw did you just transfer into wharton?

Haha yea I just got into M&T :)

hey awesome man! Congrats!

Bern is right..leadership is what the adcom is looking for and it doesn't always have to be business leadership; being a leader in your community often makes applicants stand over and above the rest. I'm a recent wharton grad and am happy to field questions so feel free to drop me a PM.

haha, random interjection: aj is awesome for answering my questions earlier in the year (during.. april) =)

penn15, how is the M&T program different from the regular dual degree with wharton and seas, which one will be more appealing? Also, is there anything else mandatory besides the 3.9 gpa requirement for M&T transfers. ( excellent professor recs, out of this world ecs and essays) or a 3.9 will do no matter what

What is more important: high leadership vs. an above average GPA? I am starting a money management corp and have co partnered in designing financial models and automation of quantitative trading to be applied in spot/futures markets (partnered with a person in CC actually :)) But the problem is my GPA which suffers from my incompetence in French and now my incompetence in a bull course I took that ended my lowering my average. My average will be around a 91-92 (91.3 now) at a school that Upenn is very familiar with. So I ask, will leadership in this case be able to sway the decision from my rather mediocre GPA?

So bern, what did you write about in your why penn essay?

pimp: M&T is a special joint-degree program that has about 50 people in every class. It is more prestigious and has better alumni connections than a regular dual-degree. The program also cuts about 6credits from the dual-degree, so you'll have more freedom in choosing classes/less courseload. That said, you come out with the same two degrees w/ the dual-degree program as M&T. You might have to stay an extra semester or summer session, though.

Well obviously M&T would be more appealing, but it is very competitive. I myself was rejected when I applied from high school and IMO got very lucky this year :) You need more than just a perfect GPA - there are plenty of 4.0's and 3.9's who got rejected from M&T transfer. 3.7's and 3.8's with better recs and ECs will have a better shot.

mahras: I think your leadership/activity will more than compensate for your GPA! First off, your GPA is not all that horrible. Second, by showing that you have business savvy and the maturity to pull off managing your own business, I think you'll have a great chance of getting into Wharton! Just convey that well in your essay. Remember, Wharton is not as numbers driven as engineering schools like MIT or CalTech. Its a business school. Academic success (well, difference in 0.1 or 0.2 in GPA) does not necessarily translate into success in the business field. Leadership, personality and uniqueness is what will set you apart.

Mahras..I just had to say this...you are the most "into business" person I have ever met (electronically in this case) :) And the fact that you are soo young and know soooooooo much already makes it all the more amazing! Good job!

well newyorker, essentially i wrote about how much I love Penn!!!! You really have to show them that you ACTUALLY love penn...not just that you want to go to penn because it is a good school. I wrote mine in a format that was kind of my journey through the college search process and how I learned about penn, learned more about penn, couldn't stop thinking about penn, and how i truly fell in love with the school when i visited. I essentially wrote about how i fell in love with the school and what specifically i fell in love with. Also i included the things that I could add to the community.

really just show the adcom that you really really want to be there and not just because it is ranked 4th in USNWR.
