Hey people,i dont seem 2 know any internationals heading to UCSD.....if u are drop in a few lines........

well, I am in UCSD...I am a sophomore...

Oh cool......nice to hear.......and an Indian too......where are you from in India?

New Delhi...but born and brought up in Orissa

Cool.......I'm from Mumbai..............could u please answer a few questions I had?........
1)How is the "quantity" of Indians(not american born ones) at UCSD??
2)Also the same question with regards to american-indians at UCSD?
3)Is the presence of the Indian community there strong:like groups formed by indians etc.?
4)Does UCSD inform you that about fellow Indian freshman and/or does it organise a getogehter party for Indians here in India before we leave?(ive heard other univs do this)
5)Which major are you pursuing?(mine is mech engineering)What is your opinion of UCSD?
6)Sorry for the barrage of questions and thanks a lot in advance !

Aite..I will try to answer all your questions as well as I can:
1)How is the "quantity" of Indians(not american born ones) at UCSD??

There are totally 3 undergrads who are still from India. I mean people who are considered as international students. But if you count people who have moved to USA within 3-5 years, its probably going to be around 50. Well, there are lot of Indian grad students in UCSD probably numbering 50 or so.

2)Also the same question with regards to american-indians at UCSD?

I would say that they number like 1000 or more. You will find plenty of them around here and some of them are not "confused"..lol

3)Is the presence of the Indian community there strong:like groups formed by indians etc.?

Yes, the largest organization on campus is Sangam, a Indian organization. There are various Bhangra, Raas Garba, Film Dance, Classical dance groups etc. There is a Hindu students council,Grad student association too... These organizations organize nice parties frequently during the quarter and they are usually fun.

4)Does UCSD inform you that about fellow Indian freshman and/or does it organise a getogehter party for Indians here in India before we leave?(ive heard other univs do this)

No. I didnt even know fellow undergrads from India before I met them randomly on campus.

5)Which major are you pursuing?(mine is mech engineering)What is your opinion of UCSD?

I am majoring in Computer Engg. and Economics. The Engineering department is highly rated and you will have no issues with that. UCSD is a really nice school and is a pretty decent choice for any Engineering field.
But the thing is that I got accepted into Wharton(UPENN) and Stanford, as a transfer, so most likely I am going to UPENN in Fall since it was my dream school because of its business school and the fact it is an ivy and the best networking place for Indians.

6)Sorry for the barrage of questions and thanks a lot in advance !

Not a problem. Feel free to ask any questions, I would be glad to be of any help to you. If you want to have the contact info of the guy from Mumbai, let me know...

You take it easy!! and good luck for everything!!!

Your post was very detailed and helpful THANX a ton !
u got into UPEN n stanford.............W O W !!!
1)Actually I want to do EXACTLY the same thing I want to transfer to stanford(my dream school).Could you please share your stats(also if u applied to berkeley) if u dont mind? Also could you please tell me anything and evrything I should do to get into Stanford?Any personal invaluable advice 2 ?Also are extra-curriculars very important?
5)Can I transfer to Stanford in any year?
4)Are you getting any kind of Financial aid from stanford or UPenn?
6)Are you double majoring in economics with comp engr?is it very tough coz Im planning to do mech engr with something related to finance maybe.
7)Do you think one can get successful faster if one goes to an ivy for networking etc.?
8)Is the guy from mumbai a freshman like me?
Knowing that you succesfuly got into Stanford n UPENN gives me a little hope.
Yeah n CONGRATS !!.....I bet you must've been mighty pleased with yourself...way to go......

Transferring From:University of California, San Diego
State: California
College GPA: 3.8 (with 90 quarter units)
High School GPA: almost perfect
SATs: 1450/1600 ,780,770,670
Sophomore Standing/Junior Standing: Junior
EC's: Plenty including a project with NASA, Director, Enterpreneur's society, law firm internship, National awards in Debating and painting, work 30 hours a week, played golf for university etc etc

Yes, EC's are really important to have a chance to get into Stanford. Also make sure you have tremendous recommendations from your professors...essays are mightily important...make sure that you have a great reason why you want to transfer...saying you want to go to a better school wont help.....but even with tremendous stats, keep in mind that ivy leagues and Stanford admissions is still a hard one..I have seen people with perfect GPA's and EC's being rejected....so apply but dont think that you will get in for sure...make sure to have a backup option...

but if you want to get into Berkeley, only your GPA and completion of prerequisites matter..

5)Can I transfer to Stanford in any year?
Not really. You can only apply when you are in your sophomore year because after first year, you would have only 1 quarter done before application due date and it would be really really hard to get
in, if not impossible.

4)Are you getting any kind of Financial aid from stanford or UPenn?
UPENN and Stanford are both need based but unfortunately my family's income is more than the maximum income which is needed to get scholarships or financial aid.

6)Are you double majoring in economics with comp engr?is it very tough coz Im planning to do mech engr with something related to finance maybe.

Its pretty tough and it may delay your graduation especially since we do not have Advanced Placement credits but it would be worth it in the long run.

7)Do you think one can get successful faster if one goes to an ivy for networking etc.?

I dont know about being successful but ivy definitely is far superior to other schools in terms of networking, snob value and quick growth prospect and people usually assume that you are really smart. But itz not to say that other schools are bad or something. You can be successful passing out from anywhere, it depends on the individual.

8)Is the guy from mumbai a freshman like me?

No he is a sophomore and he will be a junior in Fall.

9)Knowing that you succesfuly got into Stanford n UPENN gives me a little hope.
Yeah n CONGRATS !!.....I bet you must've been mighty pleased with yourself...way to go......
