The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on. - Robert Bloch

I got phone call from andover (which my S is waitlisted).
NO, NOT GOOD NEWS.
they just asked if we want to remain on the list.

Shortly after 3/10 there were some people who, upon calling to tell schools that they did not wish to remain on the WL, claim that admissions officers told them that they would receive an offer from the school if they would assure the school that the child would accept. I believe there were several such reports here.

dyer maker, where did u find these reports?

Several people said it happened to them I think it was on one of the many Andover threads.

Here's the thread and one quote:

On other news, how about the Hotchkiss wait list? My student who is actaully accepted at Andover, called Hotchkiss to get off the wait list, and to report he is going to Andover. They invited him to visit Hotchkiss, and said he should really consider it. The mom said, "How can he consider it, he wasn't accepted?" And they said something about how if he wanted to attend Hotchkiss, he should clearly let him know and they would have a decision within 24 hours. So what do you make of that??? Keeping the acceptance rate down and not accepting kids who they think will go elsewhere.

One of my students, a male 9th grade applicant, got off the Blair wait list early this week. They are thrilled.

wow that quick? my waitlist letters told me that they'd have an answer by april 10th

Neither of our waitlist letters said "BY" April 10th. They both said AFTER.
In discussions with one of the schools, I was told there would be no movement until at least "2 weeks or so" after the 10th.

I'd guess when it happens earlier, as in the case newyorker22 mentioned, they had more 9th grade boys already decline and/or he filled a need that someone they had accepted was going to fill and they declined.

Reading several waitlist letters that we received, and from viewing threads on this topic from last year, most wait list decisions happen AFTER April 10th, and sometimes long after into May and June. I don't mean to disappoint people, but just want everyone to have a realistic understanding of what seems to happen in MOST cases (yes, there are some exceptions as noted above).

We have one school from which an offer of admission off the waitlist would be welcome. If, however, it doesn't come on or before 4/10, we'll withdraw from that list. We are very fortunate that D was accepted to a school that is an excellent fit for her, as confirmed by the revisit day which went very well. We know and accept an offer from the WL school would be an oddity and are not counting on it.

Are others withdrawing from WL schools 4/10, or are you staying on for the summer?

Regardless of what your plans are and how flexible you are, I would advise AGAINST telling the school that you're willing to wait long into the summer. Go ahead and stay on the wait list that long if that works for you, but make no such promises and extend no such comfort to the schools.

If you think of the waitlists as the schools' insurance policies against underenrollment or meeting unmet needs, then you are valuable to them as continued coverage if you tell them that you will be available into the summer. The student who says nothing or has an earlier deadline gives them no such comfort. If you (or your child) is a prodigy at synchronized underwater clarinet playing and so is that other student...which one do you think the school will first pull from the wait list? (Hint: Not the one who will be available there if another such opening happens in a couple months' time.)

If you want, go ahead and tell your top WL school that you are very, very interested in attending. Just don't tell them that you'll be there for them the longer that they keep you waiting. The more they think you could disappear from the waitlist at any time, the better your shot of getting an offer ahead of similarly qualified students who have assured the school they're happy to remain on the wait list forever and ever if that's what it takes.

And I thought Squidward http://www.nick.com/all_nick/tv_supersites/characters.jhtml?show_id=spo&character=Squidward was the only underwater clarinet player... LOL

Also, Squidward is blue. This makes him more attractive as a diversity candidate. There are not many blue underwater clarinet players applying to BS. This gives him a tentacle up.

Lax, are your kids constantly laughing at the dinner table? You've got to be one of the wittiest moms ever! I hope you're really a writer when you're not behind the wheel of that taxi.

We had an exchange student living with us last year. For the first month or two our dinner conversations had her completely mystified. Her English improved rapidly and within a short time she was right there with us. She arrived with a tendency towards rigidity and reverence. She left with a impish and irreverent streak. We were so proud.

haha laxtaxi that student must have had some fun

I was told by several that white females have almost a nil chance of getting off the wait list (as there are so many applying). Apparently this is true for colleges as well.
