Anybody heard of an Imperial College?

Am planning to apply there next year as i am desperate to study in the UK and according to several of my UK friends it is a good school.

However, my parents are fretting because they think it is unknown back here and they are afraid i won't be able to get any good jobs. Will people in the know/recruiters at big companies and firms know of this university? How good is it in relation of Oxford?

It’s not as good as Cambridge, definitely and just under Oxford, with some of its departments ranking up with Oxford’s. It’s, essentially, the UK’s equivalent of MIT or CalTech, but isn’t quite as good as either of those two; still well respected, however,

Imperial College is actually one of the top European universities in science and engineering (along with Switzerland’s ETH). Check the [THES engineering and technology world ranking](<a href=“Subject Ranking 2011-12: Engineering & Technology | Times Higher Education (THE)”>http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2011-2012/engineering-and-it.html</a>).

NYU2013, Imperial is just as good as Cambridge for engineering and the physical sciences, in terms of academics. What Imperial lacks is the prestige factor.

I was also wondering this too, and other unis like LSE and UCL

also are any of them comparable to the ivy leagues?

^^^ In what way? For academics, please take note that the British Educational System is different from the American one’s. That said, in terms of employment prospects, academic instruction quality and prestige, Imperial can rival the lower Ivies. And, so do LSE, UCL and Warwick.
