I hate anime. I have never liked cartoons; my favorite shows growing up were "I Love Lucy," "The Three Stooges," "Buffy" (since I was eight!), and "Giligan's Island."

I don't think it's good art. The contrapposto is lacking, and the artists completely disregard perspective/anatomy, especially with those tiny noses and eyes the size of basketballs. I'm quite sure if an anime was suddenly a real person, we'd be terrified of the freak.

Anyone can draw anime. Some just do it better than others. It's also very, very annoying. I hate how someone draws anime and therefore is deemed "artistic."

I hate anime too! Now compound this with my best friend is obsessed with it. I really do hate it though. I mean, it's like hating painting- it's a personal preference and you can try to reason it as much as you want, but I can't change your mind and you can't change mind. I, too, never liked cartoons. They always seemed so pointless to me. I have a ton of friends who are really into it, but I just don't get it's allure

A huge misconception about anime is that people think the Anime you can readily see on American TV is exactly what anime is. You people who are describing what it is about anime you don't like are just great examples of that. There is a lot more. And America totally destroys the quality of anime by altering and filtering shows and then only showing the ones that fit the stereotype perfectly.

Pay attention. There's a huge reason why anime-lovers would rather be watching TV in Japan.

Believe, I have sat through excruciating hours of Fruit Basket, Naruto, Ess-cah-flow-nay and whatever stupid anime shows there are, and I hate them as equally as the American ones.

And you can't tell me Japanese anime actually looks like real people.

So what? Do American cartoons look like real people? Art is art. Many of what we consider the greatest representations of the human form are far from exact replications. American animation is no less bizarre in its disregard for anatomy. Look at some comic books for a minute, and tell me that anyone can look like some of those characters.

I'm not telling you to like it, but to consider that just because it's not anatomically correct doesn't make it "bad." And actually, the big eyes of anime were borrowed from Western animation of the 1920s to 1950s, so blame Americans for that.

I never said they look like real people. I'm implying there are different styles and some put more emphasis on realism than others. We really get to miss out on a lot.

Very few anime or manga put an emphasis on realism, but yes, you're right.

Either way, I doubt we'll convince effulgent to like it. Seems like he/she has a pretty set mind about this. :-P

I've seen good anime, by accident. Vampire hunter D or whatever was pretty good. watched it at a friend's house when we were both completely bored.

"So what? Do American cartoons look like real people?"
-- No, but I'm not into cartoons anyway.

"Art is art."
-- Yes, but there is good art, and there is bad art; annd, quite frankly, it's rather all subjective.

"Many of what we consider the greatest representations of the human form are far from exact replications."
-- Most of what YOU and most people consider the greatest representations... I'll stick to the Discobolos and Kritios boy and Masaccio, thank you.

"American animation is no less bizarre in its disregard for anatomy. Look at some comic books for a minute, and tell me that anyone can look like some of those characters."
-- And I totally agree.

"I'm not telling you to like it, but to consider that just because it's not anatomically correct doesn't make it "bad." And actually, the big eyes of anime were borrowed from Western animation of the 1920s to 1950s, so blame Americans for that."
-- Borrowing from western animation just makes it worse. It doesn't make it bad, but it doesn't make it good. I think anime is just bad, in general. Well, some people think music is useless. To each his/her own.

"By the way, 'Japanese anime' is as redundant as 'American Yankee.'"
I was distinguishing between American faux-anime and Japanese anime, since there seems to be a difference.

"Either way, I doubt we'll convince effulgent to like it. Seems like he/she has a pretty set mind about this."
-- I'm a "she," and yes, my mind is pretty set. Believe me, my abhorrence for anime/cartoons is not unfounded.

I've always thought that the people my age watching japanese anime were immature and childish..

but i guess it's because that childish connotation cartoons have.. like, you automatically think of children watching cartoons, adults watching the news.

But don't worry anime lovers.. i'm open minded so I'll try to watch a 'good anime' one day.

yes i agree that art is art. I don't think there's such thing as 'bad art'. Because.. art, is just.. art.. you can't have good art or bad art..

and plus, i used to think that one of the sailor moon girls was pretty.. the venus one. i wanted to look just like her - skanky legs, innocent big eyes, button nose, beautiful straight non-frizzy hair, etc..

anyway how to pronounce anime? i say it (in my head) as: AN NUH MEE

because all the people in my school who watch anime are considered...."outcasts", "freaks", and "weird". They bring it on themselves because they actually cosplay every single day in school. It is sketchy...very sketchy.

This is coming from somebody who loves anime......I'm getting very, very sick of it and I'm really starting to perfer American animation now. I don't care if Neon Genesis Evangelion is much more thought provoking and intellectually stimulating than Spongebob, Spongebob freaking rules!! I'm especially getting sick of new anime, I much perfer old school anime from the 90's.

Anime just seems so artificial and fake now. American animation seems full of spirit, I always walk away watching American cartoons with a smile. Did you know that many Japanese animations are very, very overworked and underpaid than their American counterparts? It really sucks to be a Japanese animator.

I just can't freaking beleive how crazy some will get after watching anime, I just can't beleive people dress up as anime characters and go to these stupid anime conventions full of all these freaks and losers. I want to kill every otaku on the face of this planet, they are the bane of society.
