Anybody know anything about singles in Morgan Hall?

Surprise surprise, but my son has been given a single room in Morgan Hall on the 3rd floor. Can any current students tell me anything about these rooms? Will he be on a regular hall? Will he be able to make friends? (He's a friendly kid.) Are they likely to stick a roommate in there at the last minute? What do you think?

THANKS!

Congrats to your son (if he wanted the single).
I'm going to be in a double in Daniels :)
I doubt they'll stick a kid in there with him last minute, all of the people who are in "forced triples" or three people in a two people room that I know of were told so in the original email that has all the other dorm-information.

Thanks huanlai. And by the way, do you know if the WPI message board is working? I keep getting a weird message when I try to post on it.

Weenie, Did your son say he preferred a single or did it just end up that way? BTW, if you have time pls check out the RHIT forum. I asked a merit money question there and if I'm not mistaken your son received some. Thanks!

I didnt knew that WPI had single room dorms too.

Hey huanlai! Howdy? Ready for WPI? :p

I have never heard of a single being used as a double. With the size of the room I don't even know if that's possible.

Singles in Morgan are located at the end of each hall and yes, he will be on the same floor (and share the same bathroom) with everyone else. Morgan is L-shaped; on each coed floor boys are in one arm and girls are in the other.

By the way, if he didn't specifically ask for a single I would double-check how much you are paying, as it is a few thousand dollars more than for a double.

Thanks Tigrael for the information. I checked and the room is not much more than a double (fortunately). He's looking forward to coming to WPI. We're excited!

As you should be! WPI has offered me the best time of my life so far, both academically and socially. It is really an awesome school.

Wow, singles are available to freshman! Another plus for WPI. Hubby went on WPI tour with son and said a double room at WPI was twice the size as a double at a SUNY.

DD is disappointed in her room assignment - she wanted Daniels, Morgan or Sanford-Riley, but got Institute. DH is not happy about it either - he thinks she'd be safer on the quad.

I was in Daniels freshman year. I honestly believe it is the best dorm, with Morgan in a close second. However, I have never been in Institute, and didn't even know it existed until sophomore year. While it is true that I feel safer on the hill at night, DD is lucky - campus police is in the basement of Founders, right next door.

I got a single in stoddard hall

It's so great having Tigrael and PrincessPaige on here! :)

So I have another question...Are the beds in Morgan high enough off the ground to store stuff under, or should I buy those little stands that raise the bed 8" or so? (I'm just going to be bugging you with mom-type questions now! Sorry!)

Irishmom -- I hate it when kids are disappointed with their room assignments. It makes me feel bad! Tell her that when we were at WPI visiting with the theater kids (we saw a play there), several of them lived in Institute and loved it. They felt like they were members of a special club. (I guess they get close there.) Is she in a regular double? If so she should at least be happy about that - it seems like I've heard of a lot of forced triples.

Momhippo - Although there are a couple of singles on here, I DO NOT think they are the norm by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I think my son sort of won the lottery. Really, it's a fluke.

In Daniels, the beds are adjustable, so you can have it a foot off the ground or high enough that you have to heave yourself in using upper body strength. They are also stackable (you can turn two of them into a bunk bed). I am 95% sure the same beds are used in Morgan.

Also, there is some sort of ban on certain types of lofts, so if you were planning on doing that I'd run it by Res Services first.

weenie: You are correct; singles in freshman dorms are rare. My current apartment-mate (Jean) had a "single" in Stoddard the second half of our freshman year, but that's because her roommate's friend's roommate dropped out, so Jean's roommate moved into there. Most forced triples are detripled by C-term unless they request to stay together.

She's in a triple - I don't think that bothers her so much as the fact that she's not right on the quad.

My daughter will be tripled in Stoddard - she was disappointed because it was not one of her 3 choices. The good news is that she has been in contact with her roomates and is happy with them (first imppressions). I figure it will all work out in the end - they'll figure it out. She does want to try to move in as early as possible on the morning of August 19th to avoid a bottom bunk.
I think they must triple in these dorms because the rooms are slightly bigger - is this true?

I cannot recall a significant difference between the sizes of doubles in Daniels, Morgan, or Stoddard. I think the ones in Daniels are slightly bigger. A lot of people really like the atmosphere of Stoddard; they say it forms tight communities.

I've just been informed that the doubles in Riley are the largest. I personally have never seen one; I don't think there are that many.

My personal favorite dorm is Daniels because I lived there as a freshman, but honestly you can't go wrong with any of the res halls. Its nice to be right on the quad for any of the halls up there, but all of my friends in Stoddard & Institute loved how close they got with the other people on their floors.

Weenie-- As Tigrael has said, your son will be at the end of the hall in Morgan because thats where the singles are. Morgan 3rd is actually an all male floor (in Morgan the 2nd floor is the only coed floor).
All of the beds I have seen on campus are adjustable, my bed was at least 3 feet off the ground, I easily fit my hamper under it.

^ Thanks Princess!!! :) Do those square window fans fit on the window ledges?

No. The screens do not open.

I'm sure with some duct tape and a little creativity though you could get it to work.
