anybody remember which CC kid(s) went to U Arkansas this year?

i remember pmailing with her, and maybe even emailing, but i don't have those pmails anymore. i can't find anything in my email.

i was wondering how she likes it there!

anyone know anyone else going to U Arkansas?

My oldest DD goes to the UofA and is a sophmore there in the honors college. She loves it and has gotten very involved in several campus organizations and will study abroad the first semester of her Junior year. If you need any information, please feel free to contact me. I’m not the one you emailed earlier, but am happy to give you any information you’d like.

I understand the University of Arkansas Honors College got a whopping donation a few years ago from the Walton family, hundreds of millions of dollars. Hard to go wrong attending a college in the lovely Ozarks that’s flush with cash.

Very True, Suzuki. The endowment was somewhere around 400 million, all specifically for the honors college. In addition, they raised another 600 million in an overall endowment effort several years ago, so they are now attracting top tier students from outside of Arkansas as well. I think I read that in my daughters freshman class in 08, there were over 50 NMF, increasing their ranking of NMF’s to the top ten of public universities.
Interestingly enough, even with all the money, they are very competitive in terms of merit aid. Only 125 or less fellowships or full rides per year and those go to the very top tier. My DD was a fellowship finalist and I was amazed at how many out of state students came to compete. She ended up with a chancellors scholarship, which is quite generous but even those have become highly selective.
It’s a beautiful school in a lovely town.

kcbelle - where are you all from?? what is your DD majoring in? does she LOVE it?

did you visit many other schools before choosing arkansas? which ones?

cold weather - how much, how cold, how long?

did your DD go greek?

Just a guess, but there was an impressive young lady (cancer survivor) going by swissmiss3 who ended up accepting at Arkansas - might be who you’re referring to.

Sorry, I can’t remember the student in question.
If you are interested, I can report on the 2 out of state kids I know there.

Girl with very good but barely not “top 10% GPA” stats found scholarships to cut the tuition down to the same as a Texas state school. Loved the campus, loved the business school. Pledged. Happy and getting great grades.
Boy, similar stats. Brother at another near-Texas state school. Both got scholarships to bring the cost down to equal in-state rates. He’s happy with the campus. Pre-med so feeling some pressure. Loves the school and the people he is meeting.
The only problem that I have noticed is that parents are a bit put off by the hog thing…

Mike-
I am from Arkansas but my hubby is from Indiana and a Purdue grad. We live fairly close to the UofA.
DD is double majoring in International Relations/European Studies with a double minor in Economics/Spanish. She absolutely loves it there and constantly tells me she made the right decision in choosing the UofA.
She visited U Chicago, Purdue, WashU, Reed, Lewis and Clark, Tulsa, and Hendrix. She received a very generous scholarship offer from Hendrix, but it “just didn’t feel right” for her. In the end, it came down to WashU and UofA. UofA sealed the deal when she was named a fellowship finalist and got to meet personally with the Chancellor and he did a terrific job of recruiting her. She ended up receiving a Chancellors Scholarship which was quite generous and made her Daddy very happy not to have to contribute much financially to her undergraduate education. LOL
She did not go greek, even though I encouraged her to follow in my footsteps, but instead opted to pledge a service fraternity called APO. She loves it and is very active in that group. She is also a service coordinator for the residential interhall conference and was elected vice president of the honors dorm her freshman year. She really jumped in and got involved in a big way early. This was a better fit for her than I thought it would be. She loves this university!
Interestingly, my youngest DD is in the midst of finalizing her college search and while she has been admitted to UofA Honors College like her sister, she considers it a safety school and would prefer a smaller liberal arts environment, which would probably suit her better. That being said, she is very quick to say that UofA will still be high on her list because of her sister’s good experience there.

I forgot to add … Cold weather? Nah! There are spells where it gets pretty chilly, but this is still the upper south and it’s really only January and February where you’ll see cold. The fall is gorgeous with the foliage and spring is really pretty too.

Usually 2 or 3 small snows a winter–a dusting to a few inches. It can get cold, but it doesn’t stay cold for long. Watch out for ice storms. . .

I have a HS junior that I’m trying to interest in UA…seems like it would be a great fit for her. However, she also dislikes the pig thing.

thanks for the replies.

i think swissmiss was who i was thinking of. yeah.

sounds like ua is making lot of kids and parents happy.

i think my dd qualifies for in state tuition and honors college. hoping for some additional as well.

care to share stats of daughter who got chancellors $$??

thanks!!

She had a 31 on the ACT and a 2150 on the SAT. Class rank was 9/650. GPA was 4.125 or something similar. Had 8 AP courses, scored 4 or 5 on almost all, except spanish I think. Really strong EC’s and community service. I think her essay really helped.
I do remember that that alot of the fellowships were given to out of state students and they were heavily recruiting out of state.
I’ll be really honest … UofA was not “my” pick for her, but I have readily admitted I was wrong! :-)

MissyPie-
The Pig Thing can be a bit much, no doubt. But no more so than than the loyalties of many a Longhorn, Sooner, JayHawk, Blue Devil, Tiger, etc …
One must understand that in Arkansas, there is really no other school that is so predominant, thus once one is born here, they become a Razorback by rote … Funny thing is, those that come from other states end up as loyal or more so. I’m sure most other students at other schools would say the same.

my DD was not thrilled with the pig thing either!!!

but as time goes on something else catches their attention and they forget about “the pig thing” or whatever incidental thing they were hungup on just before.

we are working on the UA scholarship app today! : /

Excellent and MANY GOOD WISHES for your DD!

One weekend in Fayetteville will get you over “that pig thing.”

Go Hogs!

-atomom (Ohio native, not-a-sports-fan, and former resident of NW Arkansas)

I thought my D would be turned off by the pig, but when we visited she decided she liked this particular version of ‘pig’. It is, of course, a razorback, a lean, mean-looking wild thing, not a mud-bathing blob of future bacon.

We have a couple of photos of her posing with one of the numerous razorback statues on campus.

We visited at a bad time, I think. It was the week between the end of spring semester and before summer session, so campus was empty. Nonetheless, the professors she visited with were very generous with their time, and very welcoming. We liked the town and the area. I thought she would surely be applying, but I don’t think it has made the final group, but perhaps I will bring it up again.

finished the scholarship app! whew!

needed to be postmarked today. we got to the post office at 4:55!

: D

now, on to the next one!
