Anyone actually willing to pay full price for OS tuition for engineering?

It would be interesting to hear other people's take on this, how they are justifying it, etc. ???

Since, we dont have all our offers in yet (maybe next week), we are having a difficult time comparing...

well what is the fees actually for OS students of engineering??

Roughly $24-$25K/year +housing $7K

ah well in my admitted letter the costs were put at 40,500$ and told me to add approx 3000$ more for engg. are u sure the numbers u have said r correct?

Close to $40K with other costs, Tuition $27K, Books $1K, Housing $8K, Transportation $800= $39K roughly per our letter.

is tht tution cost approved by the board or not?? or its just a proposed one? do u think it will actually cost 27k this yr for UIUC

Guessing within $1K

If the total cost is up near 40K and no scholarship is given, I don't expect my S to attend. He has already received a 13K scholarship from RHIT and a 12.6K scholarship to RPI and the cost without scholarships (still waiting) to U. AZ, VA Tech and U. FL are all much less than UIUC with no scholarship. Even Purdue and U. Wisc. will be much lower than UIUC for an OSS.

U Wisc is 30k and Purdue is 33k for OSS

My estimated cost for out of state in Engineering was a total of $38k.

no one haven't acctually answered the OP's question

We are considering paying full fare. My S really enjoyed his visit and the programs seem great. He did not get offered a scholarship at UIUC, however most private schools offered about 1/2 tuition scholarships. So here's the deal:

UIUC Eng tuition is projected at $27K and R&B is $8K = $35K (plus books, travel, etc., but that's roughly the same for all schools...)
RPI or Case (e.g.) is projected at $33K and R&B is $10K. Minus a scholarship of $16.5K is $33K + $10K - $16.5K = $26.5K

So on the surface, it seems that UIUC would cost $8,500 more per year.

Then UIUC offers a scholarship for a semester oversees and $1K off the freshman year and $3K per semester abroad. And I believe you just pay $800 plus the cost of the exchange program for the semester (the claim is that the cost is less for an OOS student than normal tuition).

But the bigger equalizer is my understanding of the fact that UIUC tuition will not go up for the four years. So if the private school goes up 6 percent a year, that's $2600 per year. So by the end of the four years, the costs are more expensive for the 'cheaper' private school.

So other than going to the local public university, I'm not sure what a lesser expensive cost option is for us.

(Note: my numbers are off the top of my head, it's Sunday nite. If you want to refute my logic, I'd appreciate any feedback.)

Good points apple17..I didnt know they are fixing the tuition for 4 years and the international study...

Bummer, I was told by a couple reps and I believe it says on their website that they fix tuition AS LONG AS you don't switch colleges. Eg. if you decide to go into Business or Chem E (this is in the LAS) your tuition can be readjusted to their current incoming rates. So if you're inclined to move out of Engineering, that may be an issue.

How do you get $1K and $3K off for international studies in the freshman years, etc. without actually going overseas right now?

As I read the scholarship program, you receive the $$ against your freshman tuition. Then if you DON'T go oversees for a semester in your later year(s) (I don't know if it's just sophomore or junior or what), you have to pay the $$ back. My sense is that they are trying to encourage engineering majors to go oversees.
